RPS Software Alternative
RPS Software Alternative
Hello Guys.
Is there a software equivalent to the RPS function of the Fantoms?
I would like to achieve something in particular:
I am using the RPS for chord progressions. I take the Midi-File of a song
that I like, then cut out the Midi-Notes (Chords) and place them on the
keys using the RPS function. Now I can play the chord progressions by
playing C,D,E,... on the keyboard.
Now I would like to do the same with software, so I would not have to
transfer the Midi-Files from my computer to my Fantom every time.
I think Ableton Live should be able to do this. Can anybody confirm this,
or maybe point out alternatives?
Thanks!

Re: RPS Software Alternative
You basically need a software with an arpeggiator which can import MIDI files.
Re: RPS Software Alternative
Okay, so could this be done in Logic, for example?
And how?
I am using Logic Express to edit the chord progressions anyway,
so it would be great if I could do this in Logic.

Re: RPS Software Alternative
Uhm, well, maybe Nathan could jump in and say whether it's possible, perhaps using the Environment (and if it's present in Express)?
Re: RPS Software Alternative
I dont have the answer to this question but I would like to make sure I am following the question or perhaps expand on it, assuming this is allowed under forum rules and that udo is ok with this.
Are you asking if:
1. Is there software sequencer that has functionality of the RPS feature found in the Fantom where you use the sequencer on your computer to create and then trigger patterns in that sequencer which provide RPS functionality and in that way send sysex or other midi messages to your Fantom. I assume if this is possible then you could trigger it through keystrokes on the computer or perhaps with your Fantom or another controller.
or
2. Is there software solution for editing a song file's RPS patterns and assignments through your computer but then you put the song file back into your Fantom and load and trigger it from within the Fantom.
I would be very interested in the answer to both these questions.

Re: RPS Software Alternative
I am personally only interested in (1.) but if somebody can tell us about
(2.) that is fine too.
It would be great if somebody has some real experience with this.
Of course, it is fine to reply that I need a software sequencer with
arpeggiator functionality, but what I would really like to know if and how
you have done this yourself.
From what I have read in the Manual, Ableton Live can do it. I just thougt
I would ask here, because the concept of RPS is familiar to all Fantom users.

Quinnx:
Please kindly stay out of this thread.
Aren't you the guy that claimed that the Fantom OS is all messed
up and what not?
I really don't have time to play with you, I would like to solve this
issue and then continue writing music.
Please go and annoy somebody else.
Thank you.

Re: RPS Software Alternative
Whoa, udo, Quinnx has been very critical of the Fantom OS but he has also posted numerous very helpful solutions and seems to praise his Fantom as much as the rest of us. In fact, it looked like he posted a solution to your question....I think. Lets not make this personal.
Quinnx - you did provide what looked like an answer to the first part of my question. What about the second question. Can we assign and program RPS sequences via software and then load the song file back into the Fantom?

Anyone get the impression udo doesn't like quinnx...lol
Re: RPS Software Alternative
udo, not to annoy you, but simply curious:
why don't you just play the chord progressions instead of programming them?

I have not found a way to solve this in Logic yet. If you know how
to assign an Arpeggiator Object to a key on your keyboard you could do
it in Logic too, I guess.
However, it is very easy to achieve in Ableton Live. It is pretty amazing,
actually. They way I understand is that Live seems to be one big Realtime
Phrase Sequencer. (Amongst many other things.)
Just create a Midi-Clip for each of your chords (or whatever you want to
trigger.) Then put the Clip Launch mode to "Gate". This way the Clip (chord)
will start playing when you press the key and stop when you release it. Now
You just have to assign the Clip to a key on your keyboard.
The cool thing is that you can now use all of Live's Midi-Effects on the Clips
of your chords (or arpeggios, or whatever).
