I am fantom stupid....

Post by xone »

I have an X8 and have no clue as to unlocking the potential of the machine. I bought the tweak book but I can't read.....LOL Are there any good instructional videos that will teach me how to unlock the full potential of my Fantom. Or actual good reading material or videos to teach me about basic compression and mixing? I really bought the Tweak book today and then had I to go to work so I did'nt get a chance to dive into it. Any help would be great.

The best place to start is to download all the Workshop booklets from the Roland US site. They're extremely well written and once you've been through them with your Fantom you'll have left the runway and be on your way up.
Go here and click the Support tab:

Just play with it, enjoy..
Try not to do too much at once or you will get confused or lost.

Go to a library and check out....

"Home Recording for musicians for Dummies"

One of the best books you can read for technical knowledge...If you are a beginner......

Good ideas...

I agree with all said. Those workbooks are very good at parceling all that info down into bite-sized chunks. I had 'em all printed out at my local photocopy store, and put 'em in a binder along with a copy of the manual.

So, with my particular difficulty in focusing with LARGE amounts of info, the first thing I do is start a short song, 8-16 measures or so. Then, as I run into SPECIFIC obstacles, I'll read up and try it. Then bit by bit, I figure things out one at a time. I hope to have a short soundtrack clip done by this weekend for a PR video at work.

BTW if someone has problems with so user friendly and easy keyboards like fantomX then what would they do with e.g. motif?

Another thing to try....

Post by BigBrotherMotown »

I sometimes select ONE FEATURE.....
and sit down at my board and play with it...

I will have the manual for reference and just study that ONE feature.....

The Fantom is SO complex....trying to take it all in at once can be overwhelming...
