4GB Compact Flash cards should work in Fantom X8, right?

Post by rezfactor »

In another related thread, Quinnx wrote, "I have been using 2/4 GB successfully for quite some time." But, I just purchased four 4GB Lexar Platinum II 60x CF cards (the slowest speed I could find) for $39 each, which appear not to be recognized correctly by the Fantom's v2.10 OS. The Lexar CF is housed in a generic-brand, "4GB-capacity" PCMCIA Type II-compatible adapter. In the Fantom's "save" screen, it reads, "Used: -4139 -1MB Free: 4000." In the System/Info screen, it reads, "Card 4000.8 (152.8%) Free" and below, it states, "-192.-7MB (total)." When saving Song+Samples, which includes a sample list of only a few hundred megabytes, the error message saying "User Area Full" appears.

So I guess I'm going to return the cards tomorrow for some 2GB cards (I'm looking for the most storage capacity per card and don't care about sample-loading time). Prior to saving, I formatted two different cards in the Fantom with the same results. I then reformatted one card in a WindowsXP PC in FAT32, then reformatted that card in the Fantom. Still the same. These are "standard" Type I CF cards—I don't know why Quinnx' 4GB CF card worked in his Fantom and not mine.

Okay, so now I find an old Lexar "Professional" 1GB 40x "WA" CF card I had laying around. I format it in the Fantom. Fine . . . "info" display shows "1GB available." Great! So, now I again try to save my song (recorded in the 8-track audio recorder) and all my samples [Song+Samples], which again, total only a few hundred megabytes combined. I hit "save" then "write" and the display says "User Area Full!" What am I doing wrong? Is the Fantom trying to write to the 32MB user memory instead of the CF card?

Okay, so I finally figured it out. The Fantom was saving/writing to the internal 32MB user memory, even though I selected "card" when attempting to save/write.

As I found from re-reading all the relevant Roland user manual and the Roland Workshop sections, the Fantom pre-assigns "virtual" memory locations or "identities" upon creation of a sample. Since I didn't own a PCMCIA adapter at the time I originally got my Fantom, and I had wanted to save songs and samples that were created BEFORE I had inserted my just-purchased CF card and PCMCIA adapter, the Fantom, by default, assigned those pre-CF samples to its internal 32MB user memory area, and automatically assigned user memory-based "virtual" addresses or "identities" to each sample created. The samples had no identity "defined" toward referencing the newly inserted CF card, and therefore remained "stuck" in the limited 32MB on-board user memory due to their previously assigned "virtual" locations.

Apparently, there's no way to move or copy (transfer) samples stored in the 32MB user memory WHEN NO CF CARD WAS PRESENT PRIOR TO THEIR CREATION.

4GB Sandisk ultra2.are you sure?

Post by mipopete »

Hi,I just read this post and yes..the same exact errors on my fantomX7 with 4gb sandisk card..Except I DO try to save to card with a CARD FULL! error! Now I can take my card to the PC,load all the songs and samples and pathces, etc I want into the TMP folder in the respective folder therein and upon inserting it in my powered down fantom and repower it,I can read..YES READ ONLY!From the 4gb card..Read works but WRITE does NOT.The Fantom OS cannot address more than 1GB of WRITE comands to the CF card. You can Format it though, and that saves folder structure and Lables the card for FANX..Now how did you overcome the 1GB WRITE limit? The same weird free space info after formatting shows on my card so it will not WRITE to the card at all in the Fantom..only via PC..I am sorting, editing and preparing samples on my PC right now to put into the 4gb card tmp/audio_import folder so I can have my own samples at my disposal inside the FANTOM-X7.I would have to write less than 30mb worth of sampled patches to user memory, shut off the fantom, plug a 1gb max flash card in,repower, write sampled patches from user to card..You cant write to 4gb card..it always always fails..Maybe in future OS it will allow more than 1gb data writes. You got Lexar to work??How?I will buy that one instead if you can explain how.Thanks.The world awaits a solution to this problem

answered my own questions..

Post by mipopete »

I went ahead and reformated the 4gb sandisk cf card in the new OS 2.10 and yes you still get the weird freespace readings but you can write to the card now!YEY!As for the ram..ok,1gb works but seems to be very damned expensive..$268!I paid $40 for 512mb last week via ebay..In Officemax 512mb cost you $80 plus tax!Dont LOAD 512mb worth of samples..save about 3gb worth into the TMP/audio_import folder and just import the ones you want most and after editing them for your patches and multisample kits, save those sample based kits and patches BACK to the card..I predict most will save about 1gb worth of actual usable sample based patches and kits..that is if you know how to really edit and make sample patches and kits like the pros..I will stick to 512mb ram and 4gb card for now..it works..and is cheaper too!

mipopete:

There's an old thread here that talks about the 1GB sample memory capability of the Fantom X-series. Apparently, Yamaha is the same—they say the Motif only supports 512MB, but both the Motif ES/XS and the Fantom X-series will address 1GB of sample RAM. They may in fact address up to 4GB, but PC133, non-ECC RAM is not only rare, but extremely expensive. A 4GB non-ECC DIMM would run you about $1,200 or more, if you could even find it.

I actually found a 1GB PC133, non-ECC DIMM for about $100 less at two other vendors (one referred directly from a Roland Workshop booklet). I did a quick Google search on the Kingston part number (KVR133X64C3/1G) and found it for only $160 online at a place called MemoryTen (memoryx.com). This is the Kingston part number that another member here had installed, and had reported to have worked in his Fantom. Haven't received my RAM yet—should get it in a couple days. Check other thread, "1GB Stick of SDRAM in Fantom X?" for more details.

rezfactor....

I am the one who experimented this and started that thread..Now my X6 runs with 1GB RAM and a 4GB SD card through my Acer PCM Multi Card Reader...

No harm in trying...or experimenting...

Indeed,I will look for that ram!

Post by mipopete »

I just spent the whole night sorting out samples to use on my fantom but with the 4gb flash card and 512mb ram. After I edit and mold these samps in sound forge I should be able to use them efficiantly..ala SR-JV80-xx card style!See,they took samples from akai,spectrasonics,eastwest..to name a few..Found that out tonight.1gb ram should allow me to load more multi sample kits and my fav..the SYMPHONY OF VOICES collection from Akai converted to wav!Anywhoo, thanks for the responses so quick.I will be making sweet music tomorrow with my samples and rom sounds! And YES,I too experimented on this unit before even powering it up!I bought the 4gb card before I even know for a fact whether it would work..as a hardware hacker though..common sense would dictate..that new workstations use PC or MAC style computers inside with support for fat32 file systems so it stands to reason they can handle a good choice of storage options this way if only one try it out.Viva le Roland!

Yes, I have you to thank for turning me on to the 1GB sample RAM capability of the Fantom X—THANK YOU! Ordered my 1GB stick last Sunday from MemoryTen. I just threw an old 128MB stick into my Fantom's DIMM slot that I stole from one of my old PCs to get me by in the meantime—it worked!

mipopete:

Glad everything seems to be working out for you now. Good luck! If you want to be absolutely sure, you can order the real Kingston part from newegg.com for $270, or try the possibly generic part from MemoryTen for $170. Their website says it may either be a Kingston or a MemoryTen-brand DIMM "depending on availability." I hope they were "out" of "MemoryTen" parts when I ordered!

Sorry, guys. Didn't notice that anyone had posted here.

• Format the 4GB CF card in your Fantom-X as you would any CF card using the Fantom's built-in format utility screen—it works just fine.

• Fry's Electronics, a California-based chain of computer stores (I'm in Los Angeles), had the 4GB Lexars on sale a few weeks ago in their retail stores.
