Cubase SX3 & the X6

Post by hbap158 »

OK so i have programmed the song using the X6 and the song is on Cubase. I have also saved the song by hitting the save/load button and chosing save song, but now I need to play it back from the X6 only. How do I do that?

Also, I need to send a feed of the metronome to my drummer from the X6....any ideas how i do that without sending it to the main PA speakers?

Thanks much

I'm not sure what you mean by 'the song is on Cubase'. Are you playing it in Cubase with your DAW's midi outs connected to the X6's midi ins so the X6 responds with all the correct instrument patches? If that's the case then your song is not yet IN the X6 so can't yet be saved there, you are only using the X6 here as a sound generator on behalf of Cubase.

However, if you've programmed the song in the X6's sequencer then saving it as you've described should be ok. You should have been in Performance mode when you programmed the song of course, so saving will have saved the Performance info such as the Patches you'd dialled in for each Part, FX, etc. To play it you just need to hit the rewind button and press Play.

Metronome: use one of the other audio outs, i.e. not the L and R ones you're feeding to the PA.

HI John
Sorry I wasnt clear enough :(
I am new to all this and hence I am here...

Ok. You are correct in the first part of your reply. The song is only on Cubase and is not on the X6. I am using the X6 as a sound generator only..:(

But now I need to play the song from the X6 only independent of Cubase. What do I do? I dont think I was in performance mode though...how do I check that?

Regarding the metronome, will it automatically be there in the other output or will I have to do something to generate the click?

Thank you!

Hi there,

I'm assuming that you recorded the track in performance mode?

If so, save the performance to store all of the patch and effects settings. Then in cubase select 'export' in the file menu and select 'midi'. Save the track as a midi file, giving it the same name as the performance on the fantom. (This isn't mandatory, it just helps keep things organised..:) )

Now, using the usb storage setting transfer the midi file to the fantoms user area. Open the midi file in the Fantom, then load the associated performance. Play the song, it should sound just as it did when using cubase.

To save the song as an svq file (ie, midi and performance data saved in one place) select save song from the fantoms menu.

You will now be able to bring up the song and play it without needing to use cubase.

Hope this helps..

No problem,

Ok, so you have exported the cunbase song as a midi file and want to transfer it to the fantom x?

I'm assuming you are using the usb midi interface on the fantom, so you will need to switch the fantom from usb midi to usb storage mode.

Press 'Menu'
Select 'System'
Scroll to 'USB' in the menu
Change the setting marked 'USB Mode', to 'Storage'

Now:-

Press 'Exit'
Select 'Menu'
Select 'USB Storage'
Select 'internal' if you want to save to the fantoms internal memory, or 'Memory Card' if you want to save to a memory card attached to the PC Card slot, eg via a PCMCIA adaptor..

The fantom will show on your PC as a removable disk drive.
Save the midi file in the ROLAND\SEQ\SNG directory.

You should now be able to select your midi file from the fantom's song menu.

Ori...you are a genuis!!

Great..it worked..

Ok a few more questions and then I'd be set..

- I have recorded live guitar into Cubase - as an Audio track. How can I export that and be able to see that on the X6 as well?

- Tempo appears fine but I want a separate feed for that solely for the drummer. Where & how do i do that?

- Also if someone is playing a channel live, can I mute from the mixer directly or is there any easier way to do that on the X6?

thanks so much again

Well, the audio track will be saved in cubase as a wave or aiff file usually, depending on your settings. It will likely be saved in the audio folder you specified in cubase before commencing the track.
Simply transfer this audio file to the fantom in the same way as mentioned and you should be able to select it as an audio track in the fantom.

In performance mode, you can mute individual or multiple tracks by selecting mute ('M'), located at the top of the mixer for each track. I'm pretty sure there is a way to select and mute individual channels via the pads using RPS but I'm usure as to how to do it.

As far as I know you cannot output the tempo click track as an option. However, there is a potential workaround, providing you don't use one of the fantom's outputs, labelled 1-4 on the back of the keyboard.

First, create a midi click track in cubase, for the time signature you want, either making it many measures in length or a continuous loop. Use channel 10 if it is not already being used for other midi drums.

Transfer this midi file to the fantom as described earlier.

Load the midi file into the fantom.

Now select output number 4 in the output assign area from the second page in the mixer for the appropriate channel.

Plug the mono output for the drummer into output mumber 4.

Assuming you use outputs 1 and 2 (aka A) for your connection to the PA, you will hear the keyboard over PA whilst only the drummer will hear the click track on output 4.

Hope this helps.

Ori, I am having a hard time locating the audio file on the X6...I have transferred the wave file to the same directory..

Do I now go to Edit Song, then audio track? If so I cant see it in the list of user tracks...

Any ideas please?

thanks

The sample file does not go into the same directory in the fantom as the midi file.

Put the audio file into the ROLAND\SMPL directory.

It should then appear in the sample list.

Hello hbap158 ,

In order to get the .wav file into your Fantom, you need to do an "Import Audio" function first.

Press Save/Load button.
Press F8 "Import Audio".
Press F1 0r F2 to select Card or User memory.
Select the .wav file , then press F8 to Execute the operation.

The file is now in your Sample List. Don't forget to 'Write' the sample prior to powering off or it it lost.

Also, check page 202 in the manual for the procedure. This should get you going. If not, let us know wht you've tried and ask again.

Ah, cheers Bassman. I thought I might have missed out a step in my advice. Been a while since I've used the audio tracks in anger... :)
