Can't use Editor/Librarian Fantom-X connected incorrectly

Post by eartoyz »

Greetings,
This used to work fine, now I can't get any communication between my G5 dual 2.7 and the Fantom XR using editor/librarian software. I reinstalled both the USB driver and the editor/librarian software, but every time I try and send or receive data I get the message that "It appears that the Fantom-X is unconnected or connected incorrectly. Please check their connections."
I can say that the Fantom XR shows up and works just fine in Logic and when I go to the set up MIDI devices window in either editor or librarian the Roland Fantom-X is there and I select it and still get the same message.
USB is in MIDI mode, the device ID is the same.
Not sure what's going on, if any body could offer some suggestions I would really appreciate it.
Thanks!

On my Mac with Juno-G librarian, I always have to first choose the Juno-G as the MIDI in and out in the librarian's options and click "ok", only then it works.

Thansk for your suggestion, but I have done that about 30 times since yesterday, trying to load the patches you directed me.
This is really baffling because I used the editor/librarian software without any problems when I first got the XR, after using it a thousand times with my previous X8. I 've tried swapping USB cables.
Now it appears that the editor software is loading patches into memory, but it won't pull the internal patche from the XR and the librarian won't read or write. I've been trying to find memory protect thinking maybe that is the problem, but they haven't put it in an easy to find place and there is no reference to it in the manual.
Weird!

What is the version of the librarian? If it's 2.x and XR's operating system is 1.x, or vice versa, it may not work.

Librarian version is 1.52 the XR version is 2.02. These are the latest of both versions AFAIK.

Librarian 1.52 is for Fantom-XR OS 1.x, you need to use Librarian 2.10: http://ftp.roland.co.jp/pub/roland/japa ... 10.sit.hqx.

Where can I the old SR-JV Expansion card patch conversions for the XR? I have some of the SRXs that contain the samples, and thought there were some here at one time?

I spoke to someone at Roland today and he informed me that the editor will not work with a standard MIDI connection on the XR, you must use the USB MIDI. Apparently it works with the X6 but not the XR ... pretty lame considering the XR sits in a rack and unplugging the USB cable to switch between MIDI and Storage mode is a huge pain in the ass. The X6 is a keyboard so it's much easier to pull the USB out of that. I'm going to have to email them and tell them that it makes no sense they would make the rack not work with midi cables but the keyboard does it seems backwards.

Both manuals state that you must use a USB cable to use the Editors. I've never tryed to use the standard MIDI conections between my X7 and the editor so I've got to check this out first.

However I NEVER unplugg the USB cable to switch modes - although the manual states that. When I switch to storage mode in the system the Fantom aks me to unplugg the cable. I do not and proceed. After that, when I enter USB Storage Mode it attemps to make the conection without doing it. I press exit and do it again - this time I get no warnings and the connection is made perfectly.

Try doing it with the XR and see if it works.

I never had any problems using the editor with my X8 using the MIDI ports, but it was definitely slower.
My problem was resovled downloading version 2.10.
Does anyboday happend to know about where I can the find conversions of the old SR-JV Expansion card patches for the XR? I have some of the SRXs that contain the samples, and thought there were some here at one time?
Thanks to all who replied!
