Fantom X8 controlling Motif ES6 ? Main Volume.

Post by Kaptain Keyboard »

Hi

I am using the Fantom X8 as my master keyboard with the Motif ES6 as the slave.
The Motif's outputs are connected to the Fantom's audio inputs and I control the overall volume of the Motif via the Audio Input Volume Control.
However, the Main Volume control on the Fantom is also affecting the Motif?s volume.
Is there a way to stop this?
PS - I also use Expression Pedals on both machines.

Another problem is the Motif ES has a Master Mode which does not respond to program changes from the Fantom. Apparently you have to send a Sys Ex command F0 43 6B 10 0A 00 00 xx F7 where xx is a MASTER location from 0-127?.
How do I transmit this from the Fantom each time I call up a performance.
I send upwards of 50 program changes in a live situation.

Thanks

Fantom X8 controlling Motif Es

Post by Tobs »

Hi there,
Concerning audio input I believe the Fantom just mixes this with it's generated sound and outputs the mix via its main volume. The main volume must therefor control everything.Have you thought of a simple external mixer? Even a simple pair of passive resistors for each channel should do the trick.
I also use a Motif with my X6 (classic not Es).You've found just one of the many flaws in Motif's midi implimentation..I could list many more. Two possible solutions:-
1..Use a laptop pc to control your rig via a usb midibox(eg midisport).A simple visual basic program can pick up the Fantom prog changes and send the appropriate sysexc to Motif. This works well if you trust your laptop!..(More info if you're interested)
2.Use midi the other way round ie use motif in master mode to select all program changes.Motif can send a normal bank/prog change to Fantom (up to 4 sets) whenever you select a new motif master.I use this arrangement with my rig now and it works quite well- even controlling my Triton rack as well.Again I can send more info if you're interested

There's no way to send a sysex string automatically after you choose a Performance. This data is simply not contained in a performance.

There's a workaround though:
For each Performance create an SVQ in which you put the sysex code at the beginning of the song. Now just press play (can also be done from the song list so you don't need to load the song first) and it will be sent. You could also assign it to a pattern which in turn is assigned to a pad. That way you can send the sysex using the pads. A disadvantage is that after you load the song you have to turn on RPS first in order to press the pad.

Oh BTW, have you tried Bankselect Messages followed by a Program Change? Check your Motif's manual. These can be assigned to a Performance. This is obviously the better/most simple solution.

Good luck.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the response - I have taken the easy way out.
Rather than sending the Motif out to the Fantom's audio inputs, I am using my old Mackie 1604 mixer to sub-mix my rig to the main PA.
I have the Fantom and Motif output in stereo to the Mackie, a U220 and JV1080 sent in mono plus Mandolin and Guitar also in mono.
I prefer to use the Fantom as master controller, therefore I have set up all my Motif sounds in Performance mode, and one button press on the Fantom sets the entire system up for each song.
I have always used quite a large rig, however I am an old person now and can't be arsed setting all this stuff up.
I have started working on my voice sets so that I can do away with the U220 and JV1080.
The Fantom will be set up to play 2 voices - one of which will be controlled by an expression pedal.
The Motif will also be set up to play 2 voices - both of which will be controlled by expression pedals.
This new set up is looking good (at home at least) and will offer the same degree of flexibility as the full rig, plus I can go back to using 6 channels on the main mixer and leave the Mackie at home.

Thanks Again

David
