I think its pretty clear the purpose of arx/srx and rights that go with them..

You are allowed to use these technologies/Library for your own personal music productions
you are not allowed to rip/repackage or sell these libraries to third parties.

Ok,some years ago Rolond had on their ftp all sr-jv cards's collection in sysex and midi format files free for downloading and use them. Now ,the same patches ,which ere included in srx boards(3 or 4 sr-jv per board) are copyrighted!!!
I don't ask every year what's the policies for that.Nowdays they are copyrighted, maybe next year they are free again.
Maybe the patches at the next fantom will be like GM bank, that u can't copy them in user or area card.Roland will be happy then.I just don't know who will buy such a synth.

korg1:

"free" is not opposite to "copyrighted". Everything is copyrighted, even the stuff you get for free is owned by it's creator. However, it's the *license* that's attached to the data which defines how you can use it.

ok,maybe u are right, but don't make us seem as we want to steal something from roland.we are not thieves,we don't steal anything,we just want to create more realistic and beautifull sounds for our synths!

It says on the licence that we cannot duplicate...without their consent. When I set out to share samples which required consent of the author I sought his consent as discussed on this thread. Perhaps one the users who is trying to share the Roland SRX patch information may want to contact Roland and see if they have a policy with respect to the sharing of this type of information.

We may all discuss what we think about it but the thing is we cannot claim to be what we are... erh... **THE** Roland Clan, and then aloud a thing that can potentially harm our relationship with Roland and/or 'cause trouble to anyone. Period.

This is applicable to all synthesizers, not just those produced by Roland. I don't imagine that anyone should take offense. The only dumb question is the one not asked, right? The question is simple enough: Is SysEx data (i.e. patches) protected by copyright? Just SysEx, not samples or waveforms, the rights to which I'm familiar with.

Anyway, perhaps I'll end up answering my own question. I found the following in the U.S. Copyright law, page 220-221:
(5) (A) A “digital musical recording” is a material object—
(i) in which are fixed, in a digital recording format, only sounds, and material, statements, or instructions incidental to those fixed sounds, if any, and
(ii) from which the sounds and material can be perceived, reproduced, or otherwise communicated, either directly or with the aid of a machine or device.
(B) A “digital musical recording” does not include a material object—
(i) in which the fixed sounds consist entirely of spoken word recordings, or
(ii) in which one or more computer programs are fixed, except that a digital musical recording may contain statements or instructions constituting the fixed sounds and incidental material, and statements or instructions to be used directly or indirectly in order to bring about the perception, reproduction, or communication of the fixed sounds and incidental material.
This seems to encompass SysEx data. However, if I'm reading this right, the data must accompany the "sounds" (samples/waveforms), else it isn't considered a "digital musical recording," and therefore, would not be protected. Thoughts?

Hi!
I'm FX8 user.
Last month I purchased from Greece a new FG8 + 512MB RAM + 1GB USB stick with extra sounds and special software.

Any way, all ARX patches works only if ARX boards are connected to FG8.
Why you spend time for this matter ?
Is better to focus to some real problems as file managment and many other stupid things. I make every day comparison between my old FX8 and new FG8.
I have a question to Roland.

There are no software checking on this product ?
ROLAND WHERE ARE YOU ?
I'm not beta tester. I'm professional musician.
I need my equipments ready and reliable for work.
Rooooooolaaaaaaand... we are not beta testers............

About the ARX cards.
We have to wait for new ARX cards ? Until ......???????

Yes... as VariOS. I have 2 VariOS for my studio with VC-1 and VC2 cards.
I'm waiting for the new VC-x card.... Very funny.

I'm really disapointed from Roland last years.

Since I cannot see the deleted topic, can anyone tell me what was deleted:

- Was it sharing the patch data of SRX cards?
- sharing data of the original SRX patches?
- sharing patches including sampled SRX-waves?

SH1000, someone took the patches out of several SRX boards and posted them online. Even without the waveforms, these patches hold Roland's copyrights and you can't distribute them just like that.

@ artemiy

Do you mean posting the original SRX patches or also self-made SRX patches.

And, do you think this is only regarding SRX patches or also the "internal" patches.

... And we wouldn't want to ruin the **close relationship** we have with Roland.. ;-) They care so much about us that we wouldn't want to mess that up...

I swear, you guys are something else....

Septimo, if you're talking about me, Roland Clan and what I do for Roland are completely independent. In fact, they still did not yet give me even a single stinkin' baseball cap!!! Okay, I managed to steal a white Roland shirt and two bags at the Messe... but that was unofficial!!! COME ON ROLAND WHERE IS THE BASSEBAL CRAP YOU PROMISED AND DID NOT GET!!!!!!??????11111111111
