Synth Brass on "The Final Countdown"
Synth Brass on "The Final Countdown"
Hi there,
at first sorry for my terrible english. I need a "Final Countdown" (Europe) synthbrass leadsound as authentic as possible. I own an Fantom XR. Has anyone programmed this sound? Is there a factory patch to start with?
Thank you for you help.

Re: Synth Brass on "The Final Countdown"
I too needed a patch like this for a music i have... I just bought the X7 yesterday and i was a little disapointed with the lack of certain sounds i have in my XP30, this was one of them.
But then i found the XV-5080 Patches for the Fantom and Voila, many of my XP-30 patches are also there including the "Analog Brass"? with wich i sometimes played the "Final CountDown" intro on my XP30 (just for fun).

Re: Synth Brass on "The Final Countdown"
The synth lead was done on a 1985 Roland JX-8P (the keyboard in the Synth Brass patch category icon on your X7 btw). Bjorn Lynne from Top Production Samples sells JX-8P-samples of the brass patch for $19. You can find a demo of the sound in this here opendir. If you're a cheapass freeloader, download the file called jx8p-poly-brass.mp3 from this site, chop it up and squeeze it into a multisample. Now all you need is some spandex pants and a wig and you're ready to go.

DonPhilippo, as usual, got all the right connections. That's why they call him the Don.

I got a few cousins in the Brandenburger ghetto, aka the Freakz Center. Since their motto is "mors certa horra incerta" I just know that Damian will continue to be a loyal friend to the family. You wouldn't want to miss your birthday on december 28th, now would you, Damian?

Europe's The Final Countdown
Now there is a blast from the past. I used to play that song back when it came out in one of my bands.
At that time, I owned a JX-10 and JX-8P. I layered edited stock brass sounds on both of them through midi and as I remember, had a killer sound for that song!
However, If I remember correctly, I did have to make some minor adjustments to the sounds. Nothing major, added some release in the envelope generators on the 8P which enabled smoother execution when playing. Nothing extreme or anything, just enough so it wouldn't sound choppy, but have a slight (very slight) sustain at the end of each note. I also opened the filter a bit on the JX-10 to give it more of a sharper, more cutting edge sound. I ended up manipulating the filter and envelope a bit with the 8P as well, adding a unique flugal horn tonality, but gave it a sharper "synth" edge, as a flugal horn is mellow. I mainly wanted the tonal quality of it. When both were layered together, it was cool...and very powerful.
I would think that with a few minor tweaks, you could get that sound fairly easy on the Fantom. Afterall, that was ions ago and those keyboards are primitive to the Fantom. It's a common analog brass sound...but I guarantee you it was doctored in the studio for the full effect. Ttypical of what was out in the 80's.
I saw Europe live in 1988. When they performed the song- the patch didn't have near the impact. They didn't seem to place emphasis on it (which was disappointing as a keyboard player, listening).
Comparing it to the patch I was using, mine was much more effective in a live setting, and actually very close to the recording-probably because I layered both JX's. Man...I loved those keyboards!

Re: Synth Brass on "The Final Countdown"
Could someone help me? I need a patch for Van Halen “why can't this be love” song.I could not find anything close in the x6.
Thanks in advance

Re: Synth Brass on "The Final Countdown"
Van Halen uses an Oberheim (OB-8 I think). There is a patch on the X6 called something like "Jump for KY" that tries to sound like an OB-8 but you gotta tweek it a bit to give it a little more balls. Bottom line is the OB-8 is a legend and has a very unique sound, honestly I think all you can do with the Fantom is get close.
edit: I was thinkin' of the wrong song. The main sound in "Why can't this be love" is a heavily effected guitar. There is also an organ in the background.

Re: Synth Brass on "The Final Countdown"
Hi Echo,
thanks for your answer, but I'm sorry to tell you that's not right. All lead voices in “Why can't this be love” are performed by the keyboard. The guitar take care basically of the Rhythm Section except in a small part which both plays the lead. Thanks anyway.

Re: Synth Brass on "The Final Countdown"
Hi Klaus,
I agree that xr syth brass arent't good for final countdown , unless you tweak it a lot. I could get through it downloading the XV patches. They are better for 80´s sounds.Download it and you will not be disappointed.

Re: Synth Brass on "The Final Countdown"
Ok Marco, I'm gonna sit down and try to program that sound and you can have it when I'm done. It's a rainy Sunday morning here and it sounds like fun to me. However, I've never used the fantom editor before so I dont know how I will get you the patch. Email me at Eric_Watkins7@yahoo.com and I'll reply with an audio example of the patch. By the way, I'm just gonna go for the popular right-hand melody part, not all the other stuff in the background. We can try that some other time. I had this sound down a while back but wiped the memory on my Xa and lost it. I'll get to work on this right now.
