Song/Note duration

Post by skoven »

I've had my Fantom X-8 for a week now so I'm still learning. One thing I cant quite tackle without help though is editing the position of the "---end of data---" message in the sequencer's Micro Edit. I want to sustain a chord for an overly extended period and dont want to do it in real time. I recorded the chord in realtime for 16 bars just as a sample but it's not long enough for my experimentation. I figured out how to extend the duration of the note in the Micro Edit 'duration beat'. I changed the length to 400 [a random large number] but the song stopped at 16 bars. This is because the '---end of data---' postion is located at bar 16 and is overiding the set duration of the note [so, even though the note duration is 400 bars, '---end of data---' kicks in at bar 16 and, of course, ends the data/stops the song'. I've looked in the manual and searched here before posting but I'm struggling to find the answer.

In short, my question is "how do I either a) change the location of '---end of data---' to a different bar/measure or b) how do it stop it from overiding the beat duration of a note [ie. stop the song from finishing before the note is supposed to finish]?"

thanks in advance for your help

that 400 is a fraction of a bar....not the actual bar itself.

there are 500 units inside each bar. if you have it set at 400, then the note will cut off just a little bit after the third beat of the bar.

If you want the sound to stop at the end of the 16th bar, you need to set the duration point to stop at 17/000.

hopefully this is what you were looking for. If not, I may not have understood the question.

Hi skoven / The_Czar

I felt the need to clarify what those numbers represent. There are not "500 units inside each bar". The Fantom records MIDI events at a resolution of 480 ppq's.(Pulses Per Quarter Note)

Quarter = 480
8th = 240
16th = 120
32th =60
64th = 30
ect.

Each beat of a bar (measure) is divided into 480 sections.
Beat 3 of measure 16 would be 16/360 for example.

Hope that helps you.

skoven,

Your Song length is set at 16 measures, therefore the 'End of Data message' is at 16 bars. If you want the message to move, you need to lenghten the Song. The 'End of Data' is just an informational message. If you want your note to sound past the 16 bars, you will have to add more bars. You can add blank measures (bars) by using Song Edi>Track Edit>Insert.

piaknowguy is correct, when you change the Note Duration, you are only affecting one quarter note, not the measure. 480 ppq has been somewhat the de facto standard for some time for most Midi applications.

The short answer to both your questions is to add (Insert)another bar or bars to the overall Song (all Tracks).

another way is to put in a sustain note pedal information without a stop

your chord will keep sustaining until you put in a stop way down the road of the song.

Also if your changing info don't forget to hold the shift key down. It puts everything in hyperspeed.

Since learning that trick I maninly sequence on the Fantom. It makes it faster than using a mouse with Cakewalk. Unless the song is 3,000,000 bars long. Then it can be a nuisance.
