SD XD memory card with adaptor?
SD XD memory card with adaptor?
Is it possible to use sd and sd memory cards with a type II PCMCIA adaptor with the fantom x8????
Has anybody tried or heard????
Do I need to be the first to experiment. It's just that we live out in the bush (outback) iN Australia and I can't test anything unless I buy it.
I don't have any Compact Flash cards but do have the others and am wondering if I need to buy a CF card specifically to work with the configs of the Fantom.

Re: SD XD memory card with adaptor?
I was just about to ask the same thing as I saw an SD adaptor in the store yesterday...

Pearls of wisdom, no mistake, but I bought a Fantom-Xa anyways

Re: SD XD memory card with adaptor?
Box Drone I've ordered compact flash cards as I couldn't get any definite feedback on the sd card and adaptor.
I'm still curious whether it would have worked cause it would have saved me a little bit of time and money. However I went for the compact flash cause I know that has to work.
I'm a little disappointed I can't use my 20 gig portable USB drive or even a USB thumbdrive in this machine. However I can see Rolands thinking in the compact flash and adaptor idea because it needs no drivers and will never have any driver trouble.
So even though it will be slow it will be %100 reliable.

read/write performance?
are there any speed differences between CF and SD?
the long time samples loads on startup sucks.

Re: SD XD memory card with adaptor?
fodendeyo,
thanks for the reply. I wish I would have known that 2 weeks ago. I'm still waiting for my cf cards to arrive from china and I could have had a multi card adaptor last week and saved money.
Hope it helps somebody else out there. I'm sure I read on this forum that others had trouble using a SC card and adaptor.
I just happened to have a 512 SD card sitting around here doing nothing cause my kids broke our digital camera.

Re: SD XD memory card with adaptor?
I would suspect that SD cards are not as fast as CompactFlash: take a look at a CF card, you'll see there are two long rows of pins (64? Not sure). This is a parallel memory bus. SD uses a serial interface, so depending on the clock rate SD cards support it may be slightly slower to much slower. I've wondered out this myself. I just went with CF cards..

Re: SD XD memory card with adaptor?
Speed of the card is not the bottleneck, the Fantom is. I believe that a 4x CF is just about the limit in terms of speed/performance. Also check this thread for more info.

why oh why????
I'm just curious. Why didn't Roland make provisions to allow to save more than just one user bank and allow the Fantom to see it so that many user sets could be accessed through one card. On my Motif ES, can view any number of soundbanks to the limit of the memory card. I have a 512 meg compact flash card with one user bank, some songs imported from the XP-50, and some samples of which don't even touch the capacity of the card itself. When I bought the card, if I would have known that only one user bank could be saved to the card, I probably would have opted to buy a few smaller cards.
Just curious,

Hey da-man
Zackly why I went for the SD option. I seemed to have a few around too (PDA, camera etc) so it seemed logical to just buy the adapter - and saved $$$. And they go in the Mac and PC.

So fondendeyo you've had no hassles using the SD card?
I really wish I knew this a few weeks ago but hey maybe I just need to get another digital camera that takes an SD card.
Seems a waste to have a 512 card sitting around.
