A short review

Post by hglord »

With the newest version, 7.0, Jason has a mature product. The B4REAL Hammond B3 emulator works equally well on the X6, X7, X8, Xa and the XR, regardless of the features of what MIDI controller you're using to drive the XR.

From the beginning, the B4REAL sought to use the resources of the pads and assignable knobs on the X6/7/8/a and, of course, it succeeded. Since I have an XR module, it was hard for me to get any sound at all from the product. In fact, it was hard to install because the original installation depended on the Fantom's sequencer which the XR does not have.

With Version 7.0 those issues are gone. Installation is now a matter of unZiping the distribution to a Compact Flash card, slipping it into your PCMCIA adapter in the Fantom and booting. There are B4 REAL 6.0, B4 REAL 7.0, B DISTORTED, and B OLD performances that still use the X6/7/8/a's pads and assignable knobs.

There's also a new performance called B PERFORM that uses the Fantom's Performance Mixer to control drawbars, keyclicks, foldback, and other parameters. For people whose MIDI controller doesn't have drawbars to which CC messages can be assigned, nor any assignable knobs, this is an excellent solution.

I now have a useable and highly realistic B3 in my rig. It works and, for the price he's asking, I'd expect just about everyone with a Fantom of any sort to buy one. It's much cheaper than any SRX card and it works great. You don't get any annoying useless patches, just a B3 with all the bells and whistles that that implies in a very memory efficient package. By that, I mean that there are only eight samples for this emulator. The rest is synthesized from waveforms. It uses very little memory and does the job, including controls a great sounding Leslie emulator.

Thanks, Jason. Excellent job.

Version 7 is almost perfect

This is awesome. Even for us the guys who have not ever played or seen a real life a B3. It just sounds so good. Im going to use it as my primary organ on my studio. It loads in microseconds. Now there are lots of registrations to select from. The only thing I would like is to get back my sustain pedal to control sustain and program another control pedal to activate fast or slow leslie.

It is worth each dollar I paid.

Thankyou very much,

I,ve tried to use the split but has not been very usefull to me. If I get to change the Key ranges it will probably be more usefull. I dont have much keys on an X6.

Jason,
Could you fire that modified SQV to me as well. I know the Hammond doesn't have sustain but I've come accustom to using it. Thanks for implementing the Leslie break and speed control using the two assignable switches. That works much better for me since I change those with the left hand. Love the new registrations on the pads.

Thanks,

sure thing... owen,

hey what do you guys think about the distorted and the retro effects do you consider them usefull?

you know, that you can just switch between performances without reloading the svq...

Jason,
I haven't had very much time yet to experiment with version 7. I'm remodeling upstairs (including my studio). I'll try and check it out some this weekend.

Hi,
I got the emulator and it works cool with the Fantom XA.
Is there any way to merge the performances. That means to keep the old Card preferences?

I'm sorry can you explain more what you mean?

are you wanting to have distorted and old and the origianal registry settings saved on one performance?

I already had some performances stored on my card (I`,ve backed up them). Unfortunately if I install B4REAL as startup demo song my patches are overwritten. Its more a Fantom problem - I don`t know how to performances to the card since there is no function in Libarion or X-editor.

BTW on my XA assignable knobs 1 and 2 are both set to transpose up. Ive set them to 1= enhance and 2 = disortion.
What settings do you recommend?

well all you should have to do is load the svq then save each patch in the performance to "your desired location" then save the performance after thats done you can re-save the svq and it will retain the new location information.

does the xa only have 2 assignable knobs?

for drawbar purposes i recomend general 1/2 for the assignable knobs.
