Disappointed

Post by Squints2See »

Hi everyone,

I just purchased a Fantom X8 last weekend and have been playing with it for the past week. I have not started creating my own layers yet so this may be a bit premature but thus far I am disappointed with the interal patches, at least for my use. I am hoping I didnt make a mistake in buying this over the "praised" Motif ES8. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to comment.

I will be using this keyboard in a church environment. Mainly doing "contemporary praise and worship" with some "black gospel" thrown in. That being said, it will be mainly for live performance. Going throught the sounds thus far, it has alot of cool arpeggiated patches and sound effects, but that does no good for my purpose. I was hoping for "out of the box", a nice assortment of layerd sounds such as piano+strings, electric pianos+vox, that sort of stuff. This does not seem to be the case, or maybe im just missing them. I must say that the Ultimate Grand Patch in my opinion is awesome. Does this mean to get what I want Im going to have to do alot of editing of sounds to get this? And I know this is a Roland forum, but could someone honestly tell me if Yamaha's board is going to be better suited for my tastes?

THanks for any help you can give....

You can layer the patches so no need to be disappointed. They're just not layered for you. There would be far too many combinations to layer. Just layer them yourself in performance mode and save the performance. Be sure to read the FAQ concerning FX in performance mode vs patch mode and there's probably not much you can't do with it.

You'll learn to like it I'm sure! Anyway welcome aboard.

Look at Series 8 of the Workshop Series...Performance...creating layers and splits...

http://www.rolandus.com/products/detail ... ageMode=19

It will help...greatly...

you should print all of the books and keep them in a three-ring binder...it will help ease the pain of the owner's manual...

also...make sure you check your Effects button...try and turn off the "Master" switch...you will notice a dramatic difference...and give some thought to the Effects & Patch booklets found at the link noted above....it will further help you create some fantastic patches...

It's very overwhelming at first...

good luck....

Like newer korgs, the Fantoms performances are sort of "ready-to-play music schemes" with few layers. You had probabbly looking for "bombastic" performances with many layers. That is not the case on the Fantoms. Be patient, you'll manage to get the most out of your X8. Remember, not every single synth delivers what we exactly expect right out of the box. There's always a lot to be done in order to adapt it to your needs.

hey! I use the fantom in worship every week!!

The fantom is by far the most advanced performance synth dont give up

currently I use a sweet little performance that I saved that allows me to quickly turn on and off the layers using the 16 pads. During worship I actually use the fantom to play piano and a soft pad, or to backup the acoustic guitar with a delayed lead U2 style, and when needed I actually play full Lead guitar because I am better than our lead guitarist... !! LOL

heres the patch... try it out... you can use the assignable knobs to adjust the delay and distortion. good luck.. i will send you the updates as I get them

turn on rps and the pads will work

thanks thats just the beginning.. sysex is soooo cool... most of my performances are very active and allow for a very fluid movement between uses. I also have a pretty nice B3 emulater that I am revamping for some cool stuff too. it is very nice... sells for 25$... do a search for B3 emulator and you should find some audio samples to demo it

I use mine in Worship every Sunday and LOVE it. We wear in ear monitors and I feed a click which we sync to sequence files. We have a live drummer, bass and accoustic guitar. I play keys and the midi adds strings, brass, electric guitar, drum loops etc. Man it gives a BIG full sound. If you'd be interested I have 50+ of your popular Praise and Worship songs in Fantom Sequences.

One nice thing is to setup a clip board short cut to "live play". On my live play screen I have the set list, chord charts and of course quick links to the songs and patches.

I have links to videos of our service and you can see how smooth the transitions are. We run about 50% midi and the rest of the song set is live.

mmcurdy, I'd love to get that 50+ songs from you.

tundrkys98@yahoo.com

Now about the layers.....There is so much raw data in the Fantom, that it is impossible for Roland to give you a bunch of what you want, a bunch of what I want, a bunch of what Naji wants, etc.....so they just have a bunch of stuff in there. I don't know exatcly what you are looking for, but I've found several piano + layers in the Fantom. You are looking in the performances right?? There might be a dozen sequencer setups, but the majority of them are performance layers.
