CHANGING THE PITCH/TONE?

Post by tillamonsta »

What's the easiest way to control and adjust the pitch? I know there's the coarse tone/fine tone but is there anyway to adjust the overall pitch without those because it doesn't seem to be working with me.

Hello tillamonsta,

There is a need for more information in order to help you here.

What type of Fantom (or other workstation) do you have?

Are you adjusting the pitch of a Part, Tone, Song(transposing), the Keyboard?

Why isn't it working for you? Please give some idea of what you are doing and what you mean by overall pitch.

The above info will help us answer your question.

Ok well i am using a fantom Xr rack...The problem i am having is i can't to change the pitch of patches. I will be in patch mode and be using the grand piano for instance. then i will hit enter go into the sound parameters find the coarse or fine tone...what i see is four different 100's usually 3 of them are turned off (or so i think)...so i find the one turned on and turn it down or up depending on what i'm trying to do...the usual results are it changes into some sort of chord or the midi keyboard won't trigger it everytime...it will go back and forth, one time i;ll hit the key and it will be the adjusted pitch then the next it will change back to the original pitch which is obviously not the result i am lookin for...

I am not trying to create a new patch or anything i just want to adjust the pitch on a already existing patch...just too tune it to a track that is not in middle C

i really can't imagin it would be this hard to adjust the pitch on a patch with this thing...i also work with a triton and nord lead and those are real easy to adjust...i hope i'm not totally overlooking somethin...thanks in advance...!

tillamonsta,

What you are trying to do is indeed not difficult. You just need to understand the basic strucure of a Patch. I have an X6, not an XR, but I think it will be the same. If there are XR owners out there that find this to be in error, please speak up!

What you described is what would happen if you changed the pitch of one Tone in a Patch and not the other Tones that make up the Patch. A Patch is usaully made up of more than one Tone. It is the combination of different Tones that give the Patch(sound) it's characteristics.

If you edit a Patch by selecting a change in pitch, you will have to adjust the pitch of all of the Tones that make up the Patch. If you adjust just one or two Tones in a Patch that is made up of four Tones, you will get just what you described: different notes sounding at the same time, the original pitch sounding sometimes(this is probably because you hit the cursor and selected a Tone that was not adjusted), and other odd sounding things.

Short story of how you would adjust pitch on a Patch:

1.) Go to Patch Edit

2.) Select 'Pitch'

3.) Cursor to 'Tone Coarse Tune'. This will allow you to change your pitch in semi-tones.

4.) Decrement or Increment to the value you want for EACH Tone in the Patch by using the left and right cursors to select the tone. . To be safe, just change the value for all four possible tones. Use the same value for each Tone and your patch will sound like you want it to in terms of pitch.

Give it a shot and I think you'll get what you want. Not too hard at all and takes just a few seconds once you know what to do.

tillamonsta,

It just dawned on me that what you want to do is VERY simple. I was following your train of thought and the subject in your title (Pitch/Tone). Here's what I think you can do to accomplish what you want in a much simpler fashion. . .

To adjust the overall pitch ( I'm assuming that you simply want the entire patch to change in one fell swoop) you will want to adjust 'Patch Coarse Tune'. This is found on the XR under the 'General' section.

Each increment or decrement will change the pitch in semitones. The entire Patch will be affected (all Tones).

This is what I'm thinking you want to do. Fast, simple, straightforward.

Please disregard my prior post if it does not apply. I may have been making it more involved than was needed. ; -)

Are there no assignable buttons on the XR? I use mine on the fantom S for pitch up and down in patch mode. lovely to have a full interface.... Failing that... MENU... SOUND....KEY...

tillamonsta,

Glad to help! Enjoy your machine. . . . . . :o)

FantAdam: There don't appear to be assignable buttons on the XR. I downloaded the manual and looks like you're right. It's only a single rack unit, which sacrifices some of the interface functions. So there are no assignable buttons, and the menu takes a little more navigation. But I've heard that it is a kick-ass machine! And the sound is what matters. . . . .

Hey guys, new X6 owner here.

I have a related question. I want to change the pitch. I was able to figure out what you guys suggested in the manual, but I am trying to change the pitch without affecting the time of the sample. My sample is the perfect speed so I just want it pitched up a little bit. In patch edit it makes the sample faster as well. Is there a solution to my problem? Thanks.

Adjust it in the system menu. I think is the sound tab
