Program Version Error

Post by dobrojoe »

I have just tried (twice) to update my Fantom 7 to 1.50 (with different downloads and USB sticks. Both times I get 'Program Version Error' and nothing works, even the off button. I notice that one of the files in the update 'update' is dated 18 Sept 2019 whereas the other two are 24 and 28 January. Anybody have any idea what's going on?

The 18 Sept 2019 date for the "update" file is OK, that file has not changed.

A few questions:
1. Did you format the USB sticks using the Fantom?
2. Did you copy all the contents of the zip file to the root directory on the USB stick?
3. Did you initially insert the USB stick into the USB MEMORY port (and not one of the 3 USB Ext Device ports)?
4. Did you press and hold down the "WRITE" button when you turned the power on (and not the "TEMPO" button which is for adding expansion packs)?

I think I had a similar error once when I got question 3 wrong...

It was the previous version, don't know what it was called.

Problem solved. I wasn't letting the Board 1 update complete before changing over the USB drive. There is a sort of ASCII progress bar at the top which has to run all the way to the right. Not very obvious but the cold light of day and all that!

Good to hear you have solved the problem. I think the messages displayed during the update could do with being a bit clearer!

This seems to be at the root of most "update didn't work" reports I have seen. They really should have taken some time to use more direct verbiage and prompts.

By coincidence I received an email from a Roland representative today offering to explain all the new features of the update and to go through the update process. He also said I could take my Fantom back to the store where I bought it and he would be there to do the update for me (not necessary in my case as I have already done it).

It did make me wonder whether they have been getting more than a few reports of owners having problems doing the upgrade.

As a retired software developer it seems to me that the prompts and terminology used in the upgrade process are more like those you would provide for use by in-house technicians; rather than what you would provide for actual customers.

I agree 100%. I'm still working in a Corporate IT area, and the update process seems like upgrading very low level microcode/firmware from servers or communication devices. Done by well trained technical staff. Being this instrument focused to end users, this upgrade process is really a step back.

Changing this method is complex right now. Is part of bootloader...

Fantom G offers, (a 10 years old Workstation) a far more straightforward upgrade process.
