My Translator Questions

Post by 2TIM316 »

I'm looking at the information from chickensys.com. If I'm understanding this correctly, once released, which for Windows should be "any time now", this software should allow a Fantom X, S, or Xa (?) owner to do the following:

Take CD-ROMs in Akai S1000, S3000, S5000, Halion, Giga, or any of the "source" formats listed at chickensys, and convert them to Fantom format, complete with loops, velocity switching, etc. intact.

If this is correct, then I see what all the excitement is about. As it stands, there are no "native" sample libraries available for the Fantom. Once Translator 3 is released, it opens up a huge quantity of sound libraries for the Fantom, since Translator will "read" almost all CD-ROM formats, and "translate" them to native Fantom format.

Is this correct?

PLEASE don't reply to this message if:

1) You don't know the answer
2) You don't understand the jargon (there are plenty of resources here and elsewhere where you can learn MIDI, sampling, computers, etc.)
3) You don't speak English
4) You speak in "text messaging" i.e. "u" instead of "you", "r" instead of "are", "n" instead of "in", etc... I don't speak text messaging.
5) You are under 20 years old (I don't have time to deal with children)

Thank you - nothing personal - it's just that I'm a professional and need to speak with professionals or knowledgable people.

Thanks again!

That's the way I understand the program is supposed to function. (Although the demo version, for a different synth of course, I downloaded a while back didn't convert my .krz files very well.)

"PLEASE don't reply to this message if:

1) You don't know the answer"

I'm not sure anyone on this forum will KNOW the answer for sure; perhaps contacting someone at CS would prove more beneficial.

2tim, given the history of Translator, it is my humble opinion that to achieve the level of certainty you require, you will need a few Fantom X power users to battle test the software ' after it is finally available'

Basically, we are all waiting and wondering if all the Translator promises will come true.

FBJ LOL! Good to see you around. I haven't been around all that much - I waste too much time on these forums. But the announcement of the Xa has me back poking around.

When it really gets bad is when someone fits more than one of the above categories - i.e. doesn't know the answer, doesn't understand the technology, doesn't speak comprehensible English, AND speaks in text messaging - a real nightmare!

Greg, et al, I am not asking for "set in stone" answers - just what is being promised - for example it looks like the program will be able to take source formats from Akai 1000, 3000, 5000, Halion, Giga, etc.. and translate to Fantom. That's all I want to know - is that what the program is promising to accomplish once it's finalized?

Thnx!

U guyz r soooo hlpfl.

"5) You are under 20 years old (I don't have time to deal with children)."

Unless your tongue was planted firmly in cheek, I find this comment incredibly patronising, not to mention downright rude. I'm 19, and I'm certainly no "child". And being "under 20" doesn't automatically make me less knowledgeable than the oldest user here.

But to answer your question regardless, yes, the translator should, indeed, be able to convert said sample formats to Fantom S/X format. At least, that is what's been promised.

Based on the current ChickenSys translator program, I'm assuming the Fantom program will be able to convert from the following source formats:

Akai S-1000/3000
Akai S-5000 and Z-Series
Roland S-7x Series
Roland S-50/550/S-330/W30
Emu EOS (Emulator E4 Series)
Emu E3 Series and ESi Series
Kurzweil K-2000 Series
Ensoniq EPS/ASR-10
Akai MPC Series
Akai MESA
Synclavier
Fairlight
WaveFrame
Tascam GigaStudio
Emagic EXS-24 Mk I and Mrk II
Steinberg HALion 1 and 2
Propellerheads Reason NN-XT
Native Instruments Battery
SampleCell (PC and Mac)
SoundFont
Creamware Pulsar/STS
Propellerheads Recycle 1 and 2
WAV-AIFF-MPC .snd-Triton .ksf
Audio CDs

As already mentioned, this will give Fantom users access to an enourmous sound pallette - which is particularly good news when you consider the ridiculous prices of Roland's SRX expansion cards.

Anyway, I hope this answers your question. At the very least, this is, to the best of my knowledge, what has been "promised".

Marius_19, if you are in fact 19, I humbly apologize. You're right - age is not an indicator of maturity all the time. I've just had it with these mostly young crazies who shout at everyone in the language of text messaging, or who not knowing the answer to my question, decide to reply with another question about some of the jargon I use.

Now, this is exactly the answer I was looking for. Thank you so much. I really see what a big deal this will be for Fantom users. With 512 of available RAM, being able to convert from all of these popular formats opens up a world of possibilities. It means that the internal sound ROM of the Fantom becomes much less of a restricting force in what the instrument sounds like.

Personally, I'm looking for someone to do a real good DX-7 Rhodes, Fender Rhodes, and some vintage analog polysynths - like Prophets, Oberheims, Moogs. Of course the Hollow Sun library is available in S5000 format for free. So with Translator, that's covered.

Thanks again, and sorry if I insulted you with the age comment.

Don't worry, I understand where you're coming from. It annoys me too - not so much here (except for one person who shall remain nameless =P), but particularly on other forums.

And yes, it is VERY exciting news. Partcularly when it comes to recreating vintage synths. I just hope we actually get the translator before the next century.

1) I know the answer
2) I understand the jargon (there are plenty of resources here and elsewhere where you can learn to be more cool)
3) I speak English
4) I speak in "Txt mssgin" i.e. "u" instead of "you", "r" instead of "are", "n" instead of "in", etc... You should learn to speak text messaging.
5) I'd love to be under 20 years old again (I don't have time to deal with such stress)

6) So I will not anwser you

sooner or later we will have the convertor
but i was thinkin'...
is our Fantom x OS the one who block the chicken system tool?
maybe there are some strange feautures in our board which are to be resolved before the convertor release..maybe after some upgrades we will discover that is out finally
by the way i'm happy for all the os upgrades even without the convertor too, such as korg this means our board is safe from obsolescence
don't yo think?
