Fantom 76,Fantom S, Fantom X
Fantom 76,Fantom S, Fantom X
I used to own a Fantom 76 which had brilliant beaty Performances, very good for dance music.I tried the S and X in my local music store.I couldn't find any Performances with rythems.I wonder if the FX I tried recently was faulty.I find the sounds on the 76 much better.Have the Fantoms got a different sound engines?I was going to replace the F76 with a S or X but after trying them,I'm going to buy another F76.Does anybody else here own both Fantom 76 and S or X?I have read on other forums that people prefer the sounds on the 76.

Re: Fantom 76,Fantom S, Fantom X
Not sure about the engine, but I do know the waveforms in the FS/FX are different from those in the 76. I also believe the XV engine used in the FS/FX is different than the one in the 76, but don't quote me as this is just my recollection and not necessarily fact.
There's nothing more subjective than the sounds you like. If you like the 76 sounds, and you're not into the tweaking necessary to try to duplicate those on an FS/FX, than I'd say buy the 76. My guess is that you could get an FS/FX to sound much the same as what you like about the 76, but why bother if you like the way the 76 sounds out of the box and you're not in need of the sampling or other advanced functions of the FS/FX?
Cheers,
RW

With regard to the synth engine in the Fantom FA76 and the Fantom-S and Fantom-X: they all use the same XV engine. However, starting with the Fantom-S, Roland added a few features to the engine such as step LFO, variable amplitude sine wave LFO and I believe the MFX routing structures are new to the Fantom-S and X. The base engine is all the same as that in the original XV-5080.

Re: Fantom 76,Fantom S, Fantom X
Thanks for the reply.I sold my Fantom 76 because it was too large for my small studio.I really wish that Roland made a 61 version of the Fantom 76.I'm glad that the sound engines are the same on all the Fantoms. So perhaps I can program the sounds on the S to sound like the 76.I have to get the S as it is much smaller and I can fit it in with all my other synths. Can you load the sounds from the 76 into the S?The S hasn't got a floppy disc drive so how would I do that?
Thanks for all your help.

Re: Fantom 76,Fantom S, Fantom X
Hello Synthia.
Unfortunately, as far as I know, the SysEx messages for the Fantom FA-76 are not compatible with the Fantom-S or X. This is by design. Because the FA-76 uses different internal waveforms, patches created for it will not work on the newer Fantoms without modification. So, though it is probably possible to re-create most of the sounds from the FA-76 on the Fantom-S and X, you'll have to convert them manually.
The sequences should work fine though (minus the Performance setups).

Re: Fantom 76,Fantom S, Fantom X
Hi Nathan
Thanks for your help.I think I will have to change my studio around so that I can fit the large Fantom 76 in to it.I can't live without these sounds as they are all over my recordings. The S or X just don't have the rythems as the classic Fantom.Fantom has got brilliant rythems in the Performance mode which are totally absent from the S and X.I only played on them for a short time but I couldn't find any rythems on them.Have S and X got rythems?

Yes, both the S and X have rhythms. Press the RHYTHM button. If you want to browse through the rhythms, press SHIFT and RHYTHM at the same time. Rhythms are usually assigned to pads in the Pad Bank. Rhythms are also associated with a number of the preset performances. You also may want to try the LIVE PLAY mode in the Fantom-X (Press SHIFT + PIANO). There are rhythms associated with most of those preset LIVE PLAY settings. I don't know if they are the same as on the original Fantom FA-76 though.

Re: Fantom 76,Fantom S, Fantom X
You can d/l new waveforms for the FA-76? How would I go about doing this? Is there a good site out there? I've had my FA-76 for a couple years now and was thinking about just getting a new expansion card or something, but I would want to try this out 1st.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Fantom 76,Fantom S, Fantom X
You can't load any waves into the FA76, but you can get new patches into it. I am not aware of any sites with such though.

Re: Fantom 76,Fantom S, Fantom X
I have plenty of difficulty in finding in the new internet Patches for the FA76, only for Fantom S and X. Us the users of the FA76 were abandoned. only in two sites, that is very a little, because they would serve me patches of the XV88, XV3030, XV5050, XV5080, besides the FA76.
