Cant get a good sound.. Help please

Post by TomC »

Hey guys. I normally play my board through headphones. I love the sound. However, my little girl is starting to sing so she wants Daddy to play for her :). So I've pulled out my Peavey KB3 amplifier to do so. Now here is the crux of my problem. I cannot get a decent sound from the KB3 for my piano. It sounds horrid. Tinker toy even. I've played with the EQ, etc and it just doesnt help. Its either WAY flat, phasey sounding in the middle, or way too tinney.

My question is this. Will I be happier with the sound if I purchase a pair of studio monitors to play on instead of this amp. There isnt a store in my area that has them in stock for me to play on so I'll have to rely on your responses. I was thinking of perhaps Mackie HR824's, or maybe Event TR8's or Precisions 8's.

Please be honest. I need your help.

BTW - On the KB3 I've run 2 cables from my X to channels 1 and 2 to try and get a decent sound. No luck.

Thanks in advance,
Tom

hey tom, get ready to put the peavy in the garage.
The powered studio monitors are a huge improvement and will do justice to your keyboard sounds.
The new Event Precision 8's have gotten very good reviews in SOS and Electronic Musician. They are on top of my list and less expensive than the Mackies.
I have been getting by nicely with the Behringer Truth's.
By the way, selecting speakers is more subjective than selecting a good acoustic piano in a digital keyboard.

Very cute Zilla. If I said the Piano on the Peavey sound sucks..... well anyways :)

I just want something that will sound as good openly as the headphones do. That Ultimate Piano (with the resonance turned all the way up :)) sounds SOOOO GOOOD on the headphones. I need that on some open speakers.

Guess its time to drop some more pennies :)
