Appreciating Fantom G

Post by Creative69 »

Hi All,
Having come to the G party so late in the day all of one week with my Fantom, I just want to point out some of my findings regarding it.
So, I have a Yamaha Motif XF and besides being mostly happy with it I found I could never get a Rhodes sound I was happy with. I spent a bit of money on third party sound libraries and although some were good they never really gave me what I was looking for. So I decided to try out some other boards in search of a decent rhodes sound. I won't go into the details but I tried Nord, Korg and Roland and now feel that for my needs the Rhodes is fantastic from the Fantom. Don't get me wrong its not perfect but on the whole its clear after only a few days the Fantom G will be much more flexible in my studio than any of the others.
I just want to point out that its easy to forget what originally made you spend your hard earned on the G with all the seemingly newer/better goings on at Yamaha and Korg!

Here's a thought. In the late eighties three keyboards were seen as the must have 'industry standards" in the studio
You may remember what they where? I guess nothing has changed in that regard.

Enjoy

Now it's done, but in your case I'd rather go with the Fantom XR Module and the rhodes srx expansion. It should be cheaper and it would take less space in your studio room. All todays workstations sound great. Each in its own specific way. But I don't really see the need of having two of them in the studio. There is a lot of money you paid for functions you'll probably never really use.

Yes I hear the SRX are good, in my case I needed a decent weighted hammer action keyboard as I'm a keyboard player.
Though saying theres no need for two is like saying just use one software plugin, because they happen to be workstations doesn't mean everyone uses them as such. No one in the "studio" really sequenced on a Korg M1 and I doubt many will sequence on a Korg Kronos either.

BTW I picked up my G8 ex demo for £1650 :-)

My post was based on the fact that you mentioned studio, without saying that you are also a keyboard player which means that you perform live. So, in the case of the studio I supposed that you have a keyboard (motif xf), and as an additional/alternate sound source the fantom xr or a similar module would be enough. I didn't say that there is no need for two devices. I said that there is maybe no need to have two devices of the same kind in the same form shape.

You may not use the sequencer for sequencing, but you may use it for playing back sequences (whether of music or of MIDI codes).

Hmm yeah anyway, I dont perform live no, I produce music for songwriters etc, I think my original post says it all too be honest.
If one keyboard does it all for you than fine, I'm just saying I was around at a time when each keyboard gave you something different and I still see that as being the case. If you notice my post is a generally positive one based upon the fact I own two of the current flagship models which give me what I'm real enough to know one keyboard will never. Space is not a problem for me either so I'm happy!

Creative69,
you don't get it, do you?I didn't say that you should stick to one keyboard only. I'm was trying to tell you that you could have bought the keyboard in the form of an expander which would be cheaper and would have taken less space. You would control it from your Motif. You don't like the idea for whatever reason? Perfectly fine with me. But just stop giving my advice a wrong meaning. I was talking about form. Not quantity. Form. Not quantity.

So tell me which expander takes ARX cards again? Not sure what I'm meant to get I didn't come on here asking for any advice. So stop trying to patronise me, I have been in the game long enough.

Let me apologize that I didn't read between the lines in your first post and understand that you are using an arx card. How could i miss that. I wasn't patronizing you and I don't care how long you're in the game. I just said what I would have done in your place. You started all those theories about one vs. two keyboards and how many vst's people are using. You are free to use as many keyboards as you want. A different opinion is not patronizing. So, stop playing out your ego over my opinion.

I could be wrong on this, but...
The orignal poster was saying he was HAPPY about joining the Roland family and trying to let everyone know.
He also said he was trying to help everybody remember how GOOD the board is even though there are newer things coming out and that everyone should also be happy and confident in how good the fantom g is. At no point did he put it down. In fact he said it was more flexible in his studio.
Either way, Creative- welcome to the family. Good luck with your music.

I agree. I've had a pretty satisfying time using the G6 since last July as a live instrument and it's also slotted into my studio as the main controller and as another audio interface really well. It's surpassed my expectations sound wise as well. Of course there's some issues and niggles, but all in all a good experience for me. It's worked very well for the purposes I bought it for.
