Need help syncing the G8...

Post by BrianJ »

Hey guys! I've got a Roland VS2480 and a Fantom G8...I've read both manuals sections on settings and everything, but I can't seem to find what all to hook up and which unit I should use as master?

On the hook up side, do I need both in/out midi cables hooked up to both units, or just one?

On the settings side, should the 2480 or the G8 be the master? How should MMC be set? What about MTC?

What I want to be able to do is to have the two units work together, so when I hit play they BOTH play together, or when I scroll to a section, they both go to that same point and play in sync, etc.etc.

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Hello,
Just use 1 midi cable : vs2480 midi out & g8 midi in. And use vs2480 as master.

What is the advantage to using the 2480 as the master?

Before I saw your post I had figured out to hook up the G8 midi out to the Roland midi in and use the G8 as the master...( I have the Roland midi out going to my MB24 meter bridge). Using the G8 as the master works, however, I'm having some sync issues...

I noticed that the time (min. sec. frame) is spot on between the two units, but the MEASURE, BEAT, and TICK is always off between them? Sometimes by as much as 30 ticks! For example, when I use the locator buttons on the G8 to move measure by measure, the G8 goes to, say, 8:1:000 and the vs2480 goes to 7:4:456...I don't understand what I'm doing wrong? Out of 17 measures that I scrolled through it was only spot on for measures 1 and 14...every other one was off...also, when playing the song, I stop it by pushing the stop button on the G8 and it never stops at the same place on the 2480...it's always off by some ticks as well.

I'm so frustrated right now...been laboring over this for hours...no solution. Would using the 2480 as master rectify this issue? How can I keep my MB24 meter bridge if I use the 2480 as master?

Thanks for your time!
