How to boost vocal record level in headphones... How???

Post by Kentoby »

So I record a bunch of midi tracks (all 16 channels making up about 30 tracks or so). I go to record vocals and once I set the record gain level (keep it out of distortion range - upper yellow, red on the meter), the head phone vocal level is to low to adaquitly to be heard through the music mix without turning down all the instrument tracks and maxing the vocal track I'm recording Im recording on.

How can I boost my recording vocal track volume without lowering my music mixer settings? This forces me to have to reset all of my instrument settings once I finish recording vocals.

Thanks,

KT

You can normalize the phrase that is your audio track..this raises the average level

However, don't confuse this with being acceptable. Normalizing is a compromise you'll have to live with if you're working in the G's 16-bit depth alone, along with noise and compression.

A better, albeit costly, solution would be adding a pre-amp to your chain.

ps. It's quite common practice to mix instruments around the vocal. In fact, if you're making a vocal track it should be expected.
