On the way...

Post by bradgtr »

HEy guys,

After buying the MOTIF ES8 over the Fantom x..I now am about to own both. I ordered the Fantom x6 today from Rik's..Should be here weds. I think it'll fill in the gaps sound-wise and I'm gonna use the X's sequencer to run the MOTIF (It's seq. is good but holy cow, jumping through the hoops gives me a headache) and the skipback sampling will be quick and helpful to me as well....I look forward to using you guys knowledge to help me along..

thanks,
Brad

Much as I'm thinking, but in reverse, can't part with my FS, but i still covet the ES too. So methinks I will get one.

Just can't decide whether to make it really worthwhile by getting ES8 but having the space issues, or the ES7/6. Aargh.

I'd sure love a weighted keyboard, but i'll get hell for it :)

Still love the FS for sequencing. It's so flipping easy. I spose i'm interested in the ES because a)more flexible FX b)that Arp c) i liked my s30, but only for two sounds d)i have the AN board

I just got yesterday my Fantom-X after owning Motif6.
I have to say that it appears that the frequency response of the Fantom is not as good as the Motif. This is especially noticeable with sounds containing clear high pitched sounds. For instance the piano's, bells etc. sound much warmer. I did get the Fantom to sound little bit better by tuning the Master equalizer. I don't think it's the quality of the samples, I really think it's the sound processor. What do you think, does this sound this might be the case? Do the sound libraries have more 'punch'?

I thought about bringing back the Fantom but after going back to the store to compare the two I have to say even though the Motif sounds better, the type of sounds are not that useful to me. The Fantom has more sounds that I really can use in a song. Also the user interface is still great and it seems they didn't 'fix' the Motif ES. The sequencer is still very confusing and cumbersome to use.

plusses & minusses

Post by Lord of the Badgers »

at the end of the day, there'll always be weaknesses & strengths, never a perfect w/station.

Well I dunno about the hi end of the ES vs Fantom, but the Lo end got me. Sound control use fairly ordinary headphones for product testing, but the things were physically lifting off my ears on some of the more bassy performances.

i was thinking heavily of jacking in the FS for the new toy, but although i haven't hardly touched the FS in ages, i am back into it heavily now. I dunno if the ES has this, but i do love the fact you can patch in an external source to the FS/X: before now my Yamaha s30 was controlled by the FS sequencer, patched thru into the FS and the whole lot mastered to a sample/mixdown. I don't want to lose that!!!

I guess i just want flexibility. Whilst i feel the ES has the marginal edge for me in overall sounds and fun factor, i recognise that the FS' ease of use is unrivalled in the market. If only i could afford an X AND the ES eh? :)

But also, when i get more room, i'd like to get into a PC sequencing package, and use the ES to control it remotely. Bit of a plus that.
