Just a quick question to the freaks over here.
I have 2 SRX boards in my Fantom XR but cant cope with the limited outputs on the machine.
I could sell the machine and buy a used XV5080 instead....and place the SRX boards into that. That would give me 8 mono outs and make things quicker for me.
Now: Will there be any differences in their sounds?
I dont mean differences in terms of converters but in terms of sounds (sound building).?
Would anyone recommend doing that?
Will the SRX cards sound as good as they sound in the fantom?
Thanks for your replys

Do SRX boards sound the same in fantom and XV Synths?

I don't know if i fully understand your question, but i can tell that i had a Fantom XR and a SonicCell, and i liked a lot more the sound of the SRX boards in my SonicCell (and my fellow musicians also shared this opinion). Maybe its a question of AD converters?
I do think you need to hear before you buy if you can, because each sound module has different characteristics; so something that i like you may dislike.

Re: Do SRX boards sound the same in fantom and XV Synths?
Hi K,
thanks for your answer.
Basically my question was: Do the sounds itself sound any different besides the converters?
I mean these machines have quite some years in between and surely some different technology inside...
Sure...converters change the sound....i also heard that the fantom analog outs differ from the digital ones.
If the SRX boards use the machines internal technology....isnt there any difference in the sounds itself?
For example....there are XV5080 patches avaivable for the fantom, but these are not 100% identical to the original XV5080s because....the fantom isnt a XV5080 inside.
thanks for your answer.

Re: Do SRX boards sound the same in fantom and XV Synths?
If you ignore the new converters and opamps in the Fantom, then not much is different.
"If the SRX boards use the machines internal technology....isnt there any difference in the sounds itself? "
Many the waves in SRX boards are from the earlier SR-JV80 boards anyway
All the SRX presets work on all the SRX capable synths. Although I seem to recall the RD700 couldn't play certain presets.
The sound structure for the XV and the Fantom is the same (as it has been for ages before the XV) with extra FX and parameters in the Fantom, but as the SRX cards were designed to be compatible with the XV, the cards won't use these differences.
It would mainly be the output circuitry that would make the difference in sound.
I have a XV3080 and I like the SRX (9,6,4 & 10) sounds, but it is a little different to when they are in the Fantom S or X (which seem to be the same ) and different again in the SonicCell which has the output circuitry of the Fantom G.
I did have a XV-2020 but I didn't like that so much.
So the answer is, as always, try it out , if you can, to see if you like it.

Re: Do SRX boards sound the same in fantom and XV Synths?
The most notable difference may be the effects technology between instruments. For example, the XV5080 and Fantom has COSM effects like Guitar Amp Simulator and Rotary. The XV3080 and XV2020 do not. In this case the organs of SRX-07 or the guitars of SRX-03 really sound different. However, if you remove all effects and run the patches dry, I doubt most of us could really tell much difference.

Hi Guys,
thanks a lot for your input.
Im seeing things a lot clearer now.
Im really happy with the sound of the fantom but missing more individual outputs. Thats why i considered switching to the XV5080.
Well....i have to think about.....anyway.....thanks for your replys!
