Beginner Questions from a new Fantom G user

Post by jasihn »

I'm a piano player who bought a g6 as a toy to have fun with (I have a full size piano for piano playing). I'm finding a lack of beginner information as I speak in musician terms, not keyboard speak. The manual isn't exactly easy reading.

Through experimentation I have learned enough about the live mode to have fun with it. However, studio mode is less than intuitive. I'm looking to do a very simple thing. I just want to, say, record a few chords and a drum line to solo over. Patches seem to constantly change without warning and whenever I hit play it just plays the demo song it came with. Can you use the live mode songs to record and jam over?

Are there any good places to go for beginner information? I am using the board directly out of the box. I have not added memory of connected it to a mac yet.

Thanks!

Hi Jasihn! Welcome to the Roland Clan forum.

You may want to check out this link and choose the 'Support' tab. There you will find numerous workshop booklets that will answer many of your questions. Workshop #10 deals specifically with the STUDIO mode of the Fantom G.

Cheers!

The fantom family IMO is the easiest of the workstations to get started witth so u made a good choice.. so welcome

I would certainly follow the practices recommended in the online workshops as suggested..
they will cover initialising of the song (so that you can record your own stuff)
laying down individual tracks in loop or measure mode.
etc etc..

then grab a cup of tea and read the sections about single live and studio modes.. but for now skip all sections about sound generation, patch editing, effects and audio recording ..

oh, and yes, for what you initially wish to do you can use live mode...

I am somewhat a new user and I couldn't find the G to be any easier to use. Check out all the G videos on the follow YouTube channels and you will be a near expert in no time. When I was deciding between the G and Motif all of these YouTube video put the G so far past the Motif it wasn't even a thought. Also, if you have any questions please post them here. The people here are amazing and so knowledgeable and will be able to help you with any problem you can come up with. Welcome to the Roland family and congrats on your G!!!

Before you being, make sure you are using version 1.5, and have a USB stick.

"bought a g6 as a toy"
Its by no means a toy,
a toy is something like a casio keyboard

Your in for some interesting surprises when you start going deep enough and maybe start to get lost along the way..
bring a map :)

have Fun!

Personally, I found the Pro Audio DVD on the Fantom a great help to kick start me into the basics of the board.
