Realistic Cello!?

Post by 9FiRE »

I'm going to be starting a project consisting mainly of acoustic guitar(real), drums, strings (for backing) and cello.

Does the Fantom X have a really good sounding cello patch?

or will I have to buy the SRX-06 Complete Orchestra board (or something like Garritan strings) to get what I need?

Any feedback would be very helpful.. It would also kick-ass if someone could post an mp3 sample of the cello sound(s) of Fantom X.

Thankyou very much!

Seeing as how the SRX board is just repackaging wave forms that formerly went into the SRJV cards, I doubt the cello will be much more realistic sounding than the cello on the X. Granted, I've not heard the cello on the X, but if it's there, I would guess it's at least as good as the SRX cello.
I do own the SRJV Orchestral II board. Though it is definitely nice, I'd have to say the cello is not extremely good. My best description is "lack of woodiness." Doesn't sound like you're playing an instrument made out of wood. It sounds like a very processed compressed sound.

I know my answer wasn't extremely helpful, since I don't own a fantom X yet, but there it is nonetheless.

Hmm
It is quite disapointing to hear that the SRX-06 samples are more or less out-dated! -wake up Roland! :-(

Could one of you wonderful FX owners please respond with your opinion of the FX's cello sound(s).

mp3 examples would also be VERY helpful

thanks again!

Unfortunately the only real solution is to buy a Kurzweil or a sample library. The cello on SRJV02 is really not particularly good either.

Go here:

http://f1.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/s88 ... mS&.view=l

You'll see a couple .mp3 and .wav files labeled "cellochrd" and "cellorif" or something like that. These are very quick examples of the Fantom-S cello sound that I uploaded for Edu when he was asking what the Fantom-S cello sounded like. I would assume that the Fantom-X cello is probably the same, as I would think it wouldn't be one of the patches/waves that got upgraded. Could be wrong, but it will at least give you an approximation.

or check out SRX-03 'Symphic Orchestra'. They have amazing strings... much better than SRX-06 'Complete Orchestra' (which is a compilation of JV-80 sounds). They are at least as good as Fantom X strings, if not better.

Well, as he said, he's searching for solo cello, right?
So the SRX-04 doesn't give us solo samples.

If you can find the sounds you expect in a expansion board, or in the Fantom-X, the last way probably will be sample libraries.
And just confirming, the solo cello contained on the Fantom-S is the same on the X.

Here are what I know/own currently.

Try the "Advanced |Orchestra Vol.2".

Or the "Virtuoso Series Strings Vol.2".

I guess that "Prosonus should offer something interesting to you, but in my view, the Prosonus Strings requires a survey by yourself, because I don't know it so well as the two mentioned above.

Good luck in your choice

Mucsusn: no offense, but have you actually listened to those cello samples? They are no where aproaching in tune. They are vibratoless, and they sound like a 3rd grader trying to get some noise out of it.

What about these cello samples?

These are much better cello samples. they are vibratoless, but you could probably add that on your synthe. Good sound though.

and these, though not free, are probably better still.
