help with setting up my home studio

Post by bigjoe8707 »

hi guys really stuck here. im going to list he kit ive got and what i want to achieve and i was wondering if anybody could tell me the best way to connect it all up.
roland fantom g6
krk sub and speakers
behringer fx 1202 mixer
cakewalk by roland audio interface ua25
laptop using any software recomended.

what i want to use this kit for is recording midi and audio on the laptop instead of inside the fantom g6. but im not finding it that easy.
if anyone has a similar setup i would be really greatfull for some help.

i have got a motif xs rack on order too so if you could help with that too.
thanks again joe

umm.. you have the easiest setup in the world, let's work backwards.

Connect the speakers to the Mixer.
Connect Output 1 and 2 of the G to the Mixer.
Connect the Fantom to the Laptop using a USB cable and install the drivers. (you do not need the UA25 unless you really want to use it)
Install Sonar or Cubase.

wouldn't he need to connect the audio from the computer to the mixer instead of the Keyboard to the mixer?

well I have the "audio" sound from the Daw coming back into the Fantom thru the USB cable so it all comes from the fantom outputs.

You could do it your way if you really wanted tho, just more cables to add noise.

If you are doing it my way you still have to have whatever audio inputs (guitar etc) you require going into the pc instead of the G otherwise you can only listen or record.. not both the same time.

He never mentioned a power outlet or a UPS.. Maybe I should have added "have keyboard lessons" as well at the beginning. ;)

Doesn't he need the Edirol for the Motif Rack that's on the way?

My first thought was throw away the Behringer and do something about the acoustics before hooking up that sub.

Apex, don't you have a similar setup? Couldn't he just use the Fantom as the interface for it all?

With that, the UA25 is on the chopping block too. If the mic preamps aren't any good, there's another bass trap.

I think we need a bit more info off him what he wants to achieve.

He says the he wants to record midi and audio on the laptop so i presumed the keyboards would just be midi and the audio tracks would be for live instruments and vocals.

If this is the case then the Motif will just get controlled by the G when hooked up thru midi and it will be connected to the mixer and play the same time.

If he wants to record these midi sounds as audio we talking a different path.

I always wondered who them orange things were put there for...Do you put little stickers on them and write "kick", "snare" etc.... that would rock ;)

Agreed Flumpster. I also think there is a lot of personal decision in how you want to set things up. Somethings you have to work through on your own to understand what's going on. For me, I always get irritated seeing a ton of beautiful gear being piped through a $100 behringer mixer. It especially makes no sense to me when there is no discernable reason for it to be there in the first place.

Bloody paperweights.

There is also the S/PDIF option with the UA25. I think it's safe to assume MIDI will eventually become audio, isn't it?
