srjv instrument definition files
srjv instrument definition files
Hello,
I just used Roland's instrument definition file patch script builder for my xv5080. I'll be using 4 srx cards and 4 srjv cards. Roland's patchbuilder won't build files for the srjv cards, so I downloaded the ones I need from Cakewalk's ins def library. My first question is: how do I combine the files I downloaded with the file I downloaded from Roland's site. Second question: will I have to change the bank numbers in the srjv files, or do I only need to change the slot according to whatever slot I install that particular card?
Thanks.

Re: srjv instrument definition files
Hi Obinno,
The Roland-generated INS files are woefully incomplete. Those found on David Green's LilChips website are better, but many are also incomplete.
I recently just spent a few days overhauling my own XV-5080 INS file, filling-in all the gaps.
Although I'm probably using different expansions than you, here it is, for reference:
XV-5080 Instrument Definition (integrated expansions)
XV-5080 Instrument Definition (separate expansions)
When combining expansion board information into an INS, you can either incorporate it as part of the main (host) instrument, or define each board as a separate instrument. XV-5080.ins is an example of the first option, and XV-5080_SepEXP.ins is an example of the second. Personally, I like having the expansion patches selectable as part of the main synth.
You might notice that I didn't define any Card banks. It made more sense, in my case, to define them as individual instruments, and (for simplicity) as separate INS files. I can share these too, if you're interested in some added work/complexity...
To answer your second question - it depends on whether the INS was created for the XV or JV series. If the latter, you will need to change any bank information to the fixed values of the XV series.
If you need/want some additional help, let me know what expansions you have, and, time-allowing, I might be able to finish something off for you.

Re: srjv instrument definition files
I really appreciate your help. I'm willing to pay for some complete ins def files. I already generated a ins def file from roland's website with the proper srx cards, but the srjv cards i'll be getting are 06, 11, 15, and 16. I'd like to just integrate them right with the main file I generated from Roland's website.
Again, thank you for your help. If you need my personal contact info, (email, etc,) please let me know.

Re: srjv instrument definition files
Sorry, just reread your post and realized you were refering to the files from roland as being incomplete. So I'd need ins def files for 8 cards, srx 04, 05, 06, and 08; and srjv 06, 11, 15, and 16.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Hi Obinno,
I'm working on an INS for you, but need some additional information.
Can you check to see what short-hand names the XV-5080 is assigning to the following expansion boards?
SR-JV80-11, Techno =
SR-JV80-16, Orchestral II =
SRX-04, Symphonique Strings =
SRX-08, Platinum Trax =
For example:
SRX-02, Complete Piano = "C Pno"
SRX-06, Complete Orchestra = "CpOrc"
SR-JV80-04, Vintage Synth = "Synth"
SR-JV80-15, Special FX Collection = "SFX"
Also, you know that the Techno board is completely redundant due to the SRX-08, right?

Re: srjv instrument definition files
I'm still in the process of buying the cards. If it's redundant, do you suggest I don't buy it?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: srjv instrument definition files
I wouldn't buy it, personally. If you transfer the SR-JV80-11 patches from the SRX-08 CD to a SmartMedia card, and then assign them to two of the card-banks, it's exactly the same as having the actual SR-JV80-11 board installed.
It's the same situation with the Orchestral II board (I didn't catch this before) - completely redundant with the SRX-06.

Re: srjv instrument definition files
Hmm. Perhaps I should forget about the srjv cards altogether? Maybe most of their sounds are reproduced in the srx cards?

Re: srjv instrument definition files
I think you're safe in having the SR-JV80-06 and SR-JV80-15, at least.
To my knowledge, none of the waveforms from SR-JV80-06 can be found in any SRX board, and the SR-JV80-15 isn't 100% duplicated by any SRX (although a "selection" of its waveforms are found in SRX-08).
You might see which other SR-JV80 boards can only be partially reproduced with an SRX board, and choose from those.

Re: srjv instrument definition files
Yeah, I noticed this redundancy between the old SR-JV80-series boards and the SRX-series boards. I was under the impression that the 2 series were entirely different instruments, but it seems like at least 4 of the SRX boards are little more than multiple SR-JV80 boards on one SRX board. Talk about a way to make a killing...it's Roland's way of doing what the movie industry does with their movies: here, buy all these movies on VHS. Oh wait, now DVD's are out and you need to rebuy all your movies on DVD, otherwise they'll look crappy! Okay, now get them all AGAIN in UMD format so you can watch them on your PSP. Oops, guess what? We now have BLU-RAY DVD's out, so you'll want to repurchase all your DVD's in BLU-RAY format, otherwise they'll look crappy on your HDTV...
Sad.
Sad.
Re: srjv instrument definition files
You forgot to mention the new ARX format.
Re: srjv instrument definition files
Hi Cloudschatze,
I know it's been a while, but hopefully you'll read this reply. I finally decided which cards to install in my xv5080; srx 03, srx 04, srx 05, and srx 08. Could you still possibly help me in putting together some ins def files?
Your help is much appreciated.

Hi Obinno,
I'll have the INS ready for you in just a few days.

Thank you very much Cloudschatze. FYI, I put the cards into the module in numerical order. srx 3 in slot e, srx 4 in slot f, and so on.

Obinno, can you please send me an e-mail. I have a few questions regarding the INS file.
