All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
Ok, here's what happened:
Relates to the Fantom-X7's inter memory, not PC-Card
Ironically, I went to backup my files to my desktop via USB. When I went to USB mode, the folder pop-up up on my XP. All I had was the ROLAND folder and TMP folder (no SEQ, SND). Inside the ROLAND folder, there was another ROLAND & TMP folder. Inside those folders, there was nothing. I went into the file utlility which showed all my songs in the SEQ-->SNG folder. I went back to USB and got what I first got. I went back to File Utility and all of a sudden, all I got were an infinite number of Roland folders inside each other. I went back like I was going to load a song and my list was empty. I then hooked my Vista laptop to it and saw what the keyboard saw (All these Roland folders). I tried searching for one of my songs and didn't get a hit.
Now, I did not move anything or delete anything and didn't factory reset or anything like that.
The only ray of hope that I have is the file utilization is the same: 8MB used and 22MB Free. So that leads me to believe that my files are somewhere, but where? I mean this is years of stuff that I potentially lost.
Please if there is anybody who can help with this, I will pay your gas bill for a year. Ok, maybe not that extreme, but I will be eternally greatful.

Re: All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
Mine did the same thing this week. I rebooted my computer and did a factory reset but that didn't help. What did help was removing the USB drivers and then re-installing the USB drivers. You should be able to get the "Clean All" utility and an updated USB driver from the download page on this link. Hopefully this will work for you.
Re: All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
howardS, Not sure if that's the same issue. Your issue sounds more like a connection issue between the computer and the Fantom. His issue is regarding corruted files on the Fantom.
roymazz, I have had this issue before and have suggested a fix on here before and it works. Takes a little work on your part but it works.
Here is one of the threads with details.

Re: All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
Thanks tjudge,
I actually tried that after I posted this topic. I ran error check on my Vista laptop for that drive and it came back and said it recovered errors, but when I went back into the folder, all I had was a TMP folder and a file named ROLAND. Going back to my disk space now said it was full.
I had to let it go and I did a factory reset. The most upsetting thing is that what started all this was I was attempting to backup my stuff. I read that post you gave me where someone said that it felt like someone close to you died and you're in mourning. That's exactly what it feels like. I had about 36 completed songs totaling to about 216 hours of work. It's painful.
Thanks again for your suggestion. I'll keep it in case this happens again.

Rhapsody.
I have had the same problem, and have noticed that it occurs when I connect the FX whild Rhapsody is running. It has never happened when I make sure to shut down Rhapsody first, then connect.

Re: All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
tjudge, your issue in that other thread appeared to be related to files located on a memory card. The problem roymazz is having relates to internal memory.
Roymazz, I really had the same problem you described in that I could see the files when I used the file utility but yet when I connected through USB I could not longer see the files through my computer. The TMP folder appeared to be missing and the Roland folder seemed to have an endless number of Roland folder inside other Roland folders.
I too thought it might be a corrupt file issue but that did not turn out to be the case. roymazz, you may still want to try my suggestion.

Re: All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
Thanks HowardS, but in my hopelessness, I already did a factory reset which cleared anything I would have had. But I still think it was all lost anyway.
Re: All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
Did the factory reset work because it didnt work for me?
Re: All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
It doesn't matter if it's internal or on a PC card. It still can be done as long as the Fantom is connected via USB and there is a drive letter associated. It seems that running error checking will not work. I have a friend who had the same issue and he ran error checking and made the issue worse. My suggesting was to run chkdsk from the Dos Prompt. This has worked for the other people on the other forum that I have also posted. The one person whom it did not work for also used error checking and he also reported that after he ran it, he had 0mb free.
Sorry that you was not able to retrieve your songs.

Re: All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
tjudge, it is better to confirm if it is a driver issue before running chkdsk. If you first run chkdsk and it is a USB driver issue then your computer will incorrectly report errors and try and fix them. In that case it may destroy data rather than fix the problem.
I too have lost data trying chkdsk first which is why, this time around when this exact same problem happened, the looping Roland directory as reported by roymazz, I first ran the CleanAll utility. I didn't want to follow the suggestion set out in that link you posted and have it further corrupt my disk. I do run a backup however every time I edit any of my songs or patches so I wouldn't have lost anything but I wanted to properly troubleshoot the problem.

Re: All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
Howard,
What's this CleanAll utility and what all does it do? Is it on the Keyboard? How do you get to it?
Thanks again guys for your empathy.

Re: All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
Perhaps I wasn't clear in my post on this thread. what is does is that it removes the USB drivers from your windows installation on your computer. Sometimes the drivers get messed up so then it doesn't read the Fantom regardless of whether it is reading the card or internal memory and regardless of which USB port you are trying on your computer. So, sometimes you need to wipe off the Roland USB drivers using that utility and then start fresh.
On my first post I gave you a link to the Roland page. You go to that link and then select the "downloads" tab and scroll to the bottom of that page to get the utility. Then you follow the program's onscreen instructions and eventually you reboot the computer and have no more USB drivers. Then you re-install the drivers again.
You may find that you are able to get some or most of your songs back so it is worth a try.
Let us know if it resolves your issue.

Re: All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
Ok Howard, thanks.
The only thing is, once you do a factory reset, which I have done already, there's no getting your songs back. It wipes out internal memory.

Re: All my files have suddenly disappeared. HELP!!!!!
Oh, right. I was able to get my songs back after a factory reset because I first made a backup. Always make a backup! We all make that mistake...once.

As you'll remember. That's where the problem started: When I went to do a backup.
