Getting Perf to Sound Like Patch

Post by kelsoz »

OK - I've read this question here lots of times and said - "I get it. I'll never have to ask that". Well here I am, trying to get a sound in a performance to sound like the patch, and can't. I've read FAQ 3.1 and other posts.

We're talking Fantom X-8. In patch mode, I dial in F:009 Ultimate Grand and give it a good listen. Then I make a performance with only one part checked - part 1 - and set it for F:009. I press effects/F1, set MFX SRC 1 to P1. Also set CHO SRC and REV SRC to P1 (although FAQ 3.1 doesn't say to do that). With the part set to 1, I set the part output assign to MFX 1.

When I compare the sound of the patch and perf, the perf is noticeably deader.

When I visually compare the effects settings of both the patch and perf (routing, settings, etc. for MFX, Chorus, and Reverb) - they are the same.

Thanks for any help!

You need to make sure the reverb and chorus settings are also the same as in patch mode.

Artemio - as I said

"Also set CHO SRC and REV SRC to P1 (although FAQ 3.1 doesn't say to do that)"

Is that what you mean, or something else? Thanks

What the FAQ does not tell you is the following....

Goto the MFX setttings page and set the Rev and Chorus at the bottom of the page to max.

Any further patch selections on this channel will take care of the rest.

Thanks Quinnx - Can you tell me just how to get to the MFX settings page? When I press Effects/F3 I get MFX1 which is the MFX of interest, it is 78: Symp Reso. But no Rev or Chorus at the bottom of the page. You must mean some other page.

Thanks for your patience.

Performance Mode - "Part View" Tab - Set output effect for the sound to an empty MFX

Press "Effects" - go to the "Routing" tab. In the upper right area, you'll see the "FX SRC" parameters. Set the SRC of the effect you routed your patch to as the Part the patch is on. Do the same for reverb. For example -

You have a distorted organ sound set as Part 1 of the Perf. You would route it to MFX 1, then set the SRC for MFX 1, Chorus, and Reverb all to "Part 1".

That should take care of everything.

Thanks for the deatil, MrPillow - If you read my first post in this thread, I think you will agree that is exactly what I did. In addition, I have examined all the effects parametes of both the perf and the patch and fine them to be the same. But the perf sound is dead by comparison to the patch - so something is wrong. If you have an idea, please let me know. Also, look at Quinxx's posts - I cant figure out just what he is saying.

Thanks - so far

An audio example could help a fair margin if you can procure one.

EDIT: Also make sure that on the output effect tab both the MFX, Chorus, and Reverb sends are at 127.

Thanks, MrPillow and others - Changing the output cho and rev was what I wasn't doing. Now I'm really happy.

If I were to edit 3.1 of the FAQ I think it would look something like this (my contribution in CAPS) -

3.1 How do I make a patch in a performance sound the same as when I play it in patch mode?

When you assign a patch to a performance part, it's effects settings are not loaded by default - instead, performance's effects settings are used. To make the performance load the effects settings from that patch:

* See which part number you assigned this patch to
* Press [EFFECTS]
* Press F1 [Routing]
* Route this patch to an MFX unit not occupied by other parts
* Set the MFX SRC parameter for the corresponding MFX unit to the part number of this patch

* SIMILARLY SET SET THE CHS SRC AND REV SRC TO THE PART NUMBER OF THIS PATCH
* PRESS EXIT TO RETURN TO THE PERFORMANCE SCREEN YOU STARTED IN
* PRESS F2 (PART VIEW) THEN F2 (OUTPUT EFFECTS)
* FOR THE PART OF INTEREST, SET THE OUTPUT, CHORUS AND REVERB TO 127. YOU MAY REDUCE THESE AS DESIRED, BUT THIS WILL CHANGE THE SOUND FROM THAT HEARD IN PATCH MODE.

For example, if you have a patch on part 3 and you routed it to MFX 2, you need to set MFX 2 SRC to part 3 (THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDED TO). [DELETE THIS To load chorus and/or reverb settings as well, use the CHO SRC and REV SRC parameters in the same way.]
