Lack Of Excitement
Lack Of Excitement
Sometimes I feel Roland is sitting on its hands. Except for Artemio and Planet X, there's no buzz from the company. Korg has its M3 coming out and how it can be combined with Radias. I certainly don't need to talk about Yamaha. They have a great idea using their Loyalty Program and really abundant third party patch creations.
How about some new SRXs or "Loyalty" downloads from the company. Why do we always have to rely on the efforts and hard work of forum members?
Sorry for the rant. Maybe I'm just a little jealous about what's going on elsewhere while Roland just watches.

Re: Lack Of Excitement
Well I'd agree with you on some points - I think it's excellent that Yamaha (but it seems only US) have a dedicated website - motifator - that is policed and run by Yamaha. Why Roland can't do this is a mystery - we're supposed to be so grateful when people like Jim Stout turn up here because of the lack of support by Roland. The Roland UK website effort is an absolute joke - it's been offline pretty much since it went online!
Marketing also seems to be weak at the moment - I still don't have a clue at to what the new V synth with AP synthesis is about.
BUT, rest assured, I'm sure there's a new Fantom coming at NAMM 2008. Probably see new SRX format too - since they now seem to be discounted and no new ones have turned up for a couple of years.

Roland released a new SRX this year ...
Yes, I wish they would do a little more ... but I'm just glad I have the best sub-8k workstation available ...

Re: Lack Of Excitement
As has been stated before, Korg and Yamaha seem to get everthing possible out of their synths for preset patches and multi-programs. Roland seems to build so much potential into their syths that it takes years to get everything out of them. I feel like the couple grand I spent has gone very far since I am still creating new inspiring sounds after about 3 years of use.
Exciting, yes! But, I sometimes wonder how Roland stays competing this way. Maybe there are more people than I think like myself who love programing and customizing a synth for my own puposes. I don't know.
I do have 4 SRX cards in my Fantom X7, so this helps, but many of the sounds we have are still the best on the planet.

Which new SRX Diametro? You can't include 99, 98 and 97 - there just little extras they had hiding in the cupboards :¬)

SRX-12 Classic EPS ... and isn't there a thread -- can't vouch for its authenticity -- about an upcoming B3 board?
I guess it's been out a little over a year ...
I do wish they would release more SRX cards ...

Well, all I can say is people always want more than they paid for, which in very most if not all cases is not fair. For example, you ask for some additional freebies from Roland. But what if you buy a car? Does the dealer representative come to you each month with a tank of free petrol? Come on.

Re: Lack Of Excitement
Not to bash Roland too much (as I actually love most all their products and have a lot of roland gear), but they have really dropped out of the game with the All In One digital recorders as well.
The VS2480 recorder is still their flagship recorder after all these years, and there's no hope or signs of a new recorder to take it's place anytime soon. It looks extremely bleak for a new recorder.
I hope they continue on with the Keyboards at least.

Hi Art,
Glad you mentioned freebeez. I just bought a Jeep from Chrysler, the dealer is giving me free oil changes for as long as I have the vehicle. I don't know how much oil is where you are, but in the USA it gets very expensive.
I've discovered while reading from some of the forums that talk and especially rumors are cheap. (refering to new SRX cards) That Jon Lord B3 Card---12 patches and we had to beg to hear it OR better still take a quick vacation in Tokyo.

Re: Lack Of Excitement
First off I see where your going with this and I do agree with some of your points. My devil's advocate question is at what point are we as musicians responsible for creating our own excitement? Technology is always going to increase and new instruments are always going to come out. At what point are people going to be content with what they have, and therefore create their own buzz and excitement?

Hi Dragon,
All I'm saying is if I manufacture a product, the more options I can give the consumer, the more inviting it is for him to purchase that product. If a person loves to tinker with the product---great. If another can't be bothered or just prefers not to then, that's an option also.

Re: Lack Of Excitement
Radias isn't making anything special there. The extension board isn't up to specs of a full Radias (in effects instances for an example which Radias have more than in M3... 4x2 vs 5) and sampling in M3 is still limited.Sometimes I feel Roland is sitting on its hands. Except for Artemio and Planet X, there's no buzz from the company. Korg has its M3 coming out and how it can be combined with Radias.
At least that forum is most lively among dedicated for hardware workstation. It's nothing wrong to get benefits of it.I certainly don't need to talk about Yamaha. They have a great idea using their Loyalty Program and really abundant third party patch creations.

It'd be nice to get some discount on SRX boards too. I think it'd make people happy and harder for them to move to any other competitor as SRXs had to be gone.

Both new M3 and XS are very nice machines but they aren't much better even to their own predecessors. Main plus of M3 it's quad Karma generator, main plus of XS is improved I/O speed, better LCD and twice the knobs/faders. Compare older TritonEX/MotifES to M3/XS and the rest is... strikingly similar.Sorry for the rant. Maybe I'm just a little jealous about what's going on elsewhere while Roland just watches.
I can see why Roland isn't introducing anything new in top line of its workstation yet.

Silver Dragon hit on a good point with asking:
"At what point are people going to be content with what they have, and therefore create their own buzz and excitement?"
I think if someone already has a Fantom keyboard then they have and will always have an INCREDIBLE music making tool at their disposal. There's no reason why a person can't make awe inspiring songs with the Fantom and a good recorder. Talent is all that is needed.
For those of us here with a Fantom I say don't worry about what comes out next technology wise. Rather, worry about what comes out or doesn't come out of yourself musicwise instead!
The Fantom will ALWAYS sound great even into the far future! Sure, the strings and some other sounds could be a little more lifelike, but even those are still passable, and most sounds on the Fantom are incredible!
If some of you were into making music 15-20 years ago you would have double flipped and wet your pants if you had access to a Fantom back then! No one would believe you could get such realistic sounds from a keyboard at that time.
Embrace what you already have and squeeze your equipment for every drop of juice it can give you and you'll be amazed at what your "old" gear can do if you play it more rather than dream of new and "better" more.
With that said, technology will always march on and it's up to you if you wish to follow along. You don't have to though, and you may not even need to considering what you already have.

Re: Lack Of Excitement
Sorry to split hairs diametro, but I think 12 was released at NAMM 2006 - since there were no new releases this year, then I recognise that as (nearly) being a couple of years old!
Anyhow, I do see the cards at (a little) reduced prices which does usually indicate that something new is on it's way - and lets face it, at the price Roland want for them, they should offer new waveforms and more of them - yes on the whole the sounds are brilliant, but the entire library IMHO needs to be redone since their is an extremely annoying amount of overlap. Too many mediocre sounds which overlap on other cards - acoustic guitars spring to mind as an obvious example. I've got them on 7, 9, and 3. The soundset needs to be re-catogorised and then focused with highest quality sounds.
Art;
"Well, all I can say is people always want more than they paid for, which in very most if not all cases is not fair. "
Absolutely not true, I want what I paid for! I want third party sample support (as promised) so I'm not dependent on srx boards. The Fantom is really a closed system, which means you have to look straight to a computer to get what you want - this to me undermines the concept of a workstation.
I also want proper I/O performance, why did I pay so much money for something a 386 computer can do faster? It makes the very good functionality of audio tracks a complete waste of time (pardon the pun)! Probably why they nether bothered to provide sample support, getting them in and out is simply too slow.
Anyhow, despite my moaning, the Fantom is still a good board and has some great sounds, espcially with those SRX's (but you have to pay for it), but it could be so much better quite easily. I'm looking forward to seeing their next effort.
