just canceled XS order - sticking with fantom X6

Post by cuborg »

For some time I was thinking I'd replace my X6 with new XS6
but after few days playing it in SamAsh I've canceled motif XS6 order. It doesn't really add much to what I need and what fantom doesn't have. Most importantly keybed is much worse then in fantomX6. It's very light and heard already somebody broke a key after one use. Granted that motif has few sounds more realistic then fantom, but other then that looks like yamaha catching up with roland just now with workstation's features.

So ... that means you're ... staying?

Jeez, I remember when you were just a whippersnapper with a Juno-G.

I know what you mean about the XS ... actually, I don't ... 'cause I haven't even been arsed to drive the five miles to demo it.

It seems just as sterile and boring as any Motif ...

I don't know why -- it's so irrational -- but people who dig Motifs kind of creep me out ...

I guess so :)

yeah, XS is tempting at first, but all these arrangers type features freaking me out. I don't want any automation in my playing except the sequencer which I program by myself.

come on, I was driving 7 miles last whole week :)

btw, people on motif forum are from the past if you know what I mean... ;)

Anyway I think for now I'm cured from GAS and I'll wait what roland do next.

I think Yamaha is trying to fit what they think is a niche market for them and the direction of workstations. While I did like the sounds I heard on the XS, I wouldn't part ways with my Fantom X either for one. I'm glad your staying and continued success and music making with the Fantom X. Its also nice you cured your GAS as that can certainly be a nuisance especially when something new and potentially exciting comes out.

Yes, I kid with you Cuborg ... but really, I'm glad you already have what you need. (Isn't that the best?)

I myself am holding very steady with the GAS ... in fact, I'm thinking of selling everything off but the Fantom X. (Which is kind of silly 'cause the reason I'm not using my other gear is because I'm focusing on my live thing, which right now, is strictly Fantom ... 1) to save on setup time 2) but it's also forcing me to get everything I can out of the Fantom ... once I feel I need more horsepower, I may call the Fusion into live duties as well ....

Gear Acquisition Syndrome. This is easily contageus illness,
so be careful now, it's spread through internet.

Oh my God, I've just come out in a rash, having increased heartbeat, sweaty palms and yes it's true as I reach for my credit card and another synth is on it's way to me. But there's more oh no I've just seen a Roland TR808 on ebay buy it now for $400, I'll have to get it just in case I might need it in the next 20 years!

I have not seen the motif XS yet as they have not arrived in Australia yet and I wont even think about buying the motif Xs or the Korg M3 until the next generetion Roland is released, and by the looks of the V synth GT perhaps a Fantom GT is around the corner until then I love my fantom x.

Motif XS surely has some great features and I don't doubt some of XS sounds are of a great quality (I have ES rack so I know what to expect). XS has also some nice things like 8 faders and 8 knobs. However...

Where are improvements in sequencer?!! Actually it has been downgraded from ES because step sequencing function is removed.
There is a nice bigger colour screen yet not pianoroll editor...
There 1GB sample ram capability and vastly improved load/save performance yet audio recording is just done via sample events triggers...

XS will be much attractive in a form of rack for sure. Just as ES rack is in a combination with Fantom now. :)

but roland should improve performances because these on XS simple rocks, you can buy it just based on that. Roland preset perfs
are a joke.

The performances better sound good on the XS as Yamaha is really using that as a selling to point to single person musicians. I went to GC today and played the XS some more. I was impressed with the ease to create a performance on the XS. I liked the sounds but they didn't have that wow factor for me. The screen was nice and better than previous incarnations. All in all a nice board but not something that will make mer want to sell or replace my Fantom X.

exactly, how is that possible that fantomX doesn't have not even one playable performance having so many nice sounds???
