Recording Fantom 7

Post by dobrojoe »

I've been trying to record a piano performance into Logic Pro without much success.

First, I tried MIDI audio. No matter what settings I used, the sound was distorted so I reverted to a micing up my (Peavey) keyboard amp.

I have noticed it before but when I go higher up the treble end, the sound loses energy. In the middle of the keyboard, it is fine, but go two octaves up from middle C and the sound becomes deader and deader. There is just no sparkle.

I have tried compensating with the EQ on the amp but it doesn't help. I don't have this problem with my Roland VR-730 which has an even level across all notes. Is this an inherent problem with the model or is it something I can adjust in the settings?

I've also experienced distortion issues with my Fantom 7 when using USB audio. I've found the default USB audio output level (127) is way too high, and results in digital clipping at the source (Fantom) which can't be corrected at the destination (Laptop, USB mixer, etc). The only way I've found to eliminate the distortion is by changing the Fantom's "USB Audio Output Level" setting down to the 30-40 range.

Menu -> System -> USB -> USB Audio Output Level

I'm hoping they fix USB audio in a future firmware update.

There is no such thing a "MIDI Audio". Whatever you're doing, it's not that.

USB levels are very hot. At mix down my faders were at 20%.

If you check carefully ... you have a USB output control ... the right most fader is switchable between USB Input and Output control. This might help.

Do you mean it can function as a level control ? I'm still hearing some heavily clipped sounds at all levels ... the USB audio interface that this board is equipped with I suspect is only low resolution.

Yep, just like it says on page 22 of the manual, which you should read through completely at least once.

16-bit ... 44.1K/48kHz. You don't have to guess or suspect ... it's right there on the website.

At this point it's reasonable to conclude that - if you are hearing 'clipping' at all levels - the problem is not with the Fantom. It may be a system tuning issue or something else. I recommend looking up "Glitch Free", a tremendous guide to tuning your system for maximum performance.

If you can give me some details about your computer, and how you have the Fantom audio interface configured, I may be able to offer more direct assistance.

Hi,
I had this issue too and I found perfect the MENU | SYSTEM | USB | USB Audio Output Level =100.

This is maximum 0 db on my DAW.

The issue that I have often is a bad configuration in my DAW when I send the recording MIDI channel back to the Fantom (that play a double note) so the volume go double is distorted. Of course this is a bad configuration and it can be easily fixed.

Hi,
is there any documantation which USB-audio outputs correspond to which Fantom-part?
I'm trying to get my new Fantom work with Logic Pro via External Instrument.
I've done it with the Jupiter-Xm and it works.
But I'm struggeling with the Fantom.
Any idea about the USB-audio outputs?
Thanks,
Florian

That assignment is in your MacOS audio/midi setup. If you already have an audio interface installed (could be the Jupiter), the 16 Fantom channels are dumped in so if you have a 5 input interface, tone 1 USB audio output is input 6.
