Jupiter 80 and Fantom 8

If I had to just work with two keyboards from now on, it would be the JP-80 and the new Fantom.

thats a powerful statement! this was initially my reason or grabbing the F8, so its cool to hear you say that...

That is indeed a powerful quote. I'd be equally interested to learn how the new Fantom pairs with the JP-X, especially from a tactile UI perspective along with the difference in tones... but that review is a little further out I guess.

I have longed for a really good 88 bed to play the JP-80 - using that SN-A to full effect! Not that there's anything wrong with the JP-80 keybed - fantastic synth action.

There are similarities, yes. To some extent Registrations/Livesets/Tones/Partials of the JP-80 is very similar in form and function to the Scenes/Zones/Tones/Partials of the Fantom. Livesets and Zones are where a lot of the action is with sound creation. Except there are four partials with the Fantom!

Using the TR-REC to trigger out to the JP-80 is great fun; using the Zone sliders to fade things in and out. So many creative possibilities.

I have a Jupiter/Fantom weekend planned - children away on trips and wife got concerts; so its me, some wine and my 'other' two beautiful ladies. I'll get back to you on Monday with more thoughts and experiences.

Where it is very different is the zone vs liveset.. really wished a zone could work as a liveset with 4 tones.. its so convenient saving a group of 4 tones 4 recalling.. seriously when is the last time i used a single voice on the JP80? Just the solo voice

Also the super natural tones (acoustic) are still missing, just a vague prommise some will be added in the future

So untill then the jp80 is still my favorite

Cool stuff.

Another curious question— tone blender. Did any of you JP80 owners use it much? Does such a thing exist on the f8(7/6)?

I’m waiting for my replacement F8 to get back (Thursday) so i cant play around...

If it could be assigned to kbs aftertouch or joysticks modulation, then yes.

Played on a Fantom 6 today and the keybed was exactly what I was hoping it would be... pretty much in line with the same quality as the JP80. I was blown away at the simplicity of this keyboard. It's pretty darn intuitive to me.

Didn’t want to start a new thread...

Any of you cats with the Fantom (or JP80) feel the need to use any of the expression pedals or the Roland RPU3 3 pedal gadget? What about the EV-5 pedal? Do you guys recommend any of these pedals for the F8/Jp80? Do you feel they are needed I guess is what I’m askin..

EV-5 is fab for the JP-80; directly controls the tone blender. No such function in the new F platform (that I can find so far). The 3 pedal unit would be perfect for the V-Piano on the Fantom 8.

do you think/feel the 3 pedal unit would be a good fit for the JU 80?

by the by,

got my replacement F8 unit in thursday and it was damaged. a cosmetic imperfection on the rear corner, but just at the top in back. the plastic wrapping was not damaged and the box was not damaged at that section. sent that one in for yet a 3rd replacement.. :)

How did you integrate the JP80 with the Fantom?; only Midi (5 pin/USB)? or has somebody also used the input connector(s) (XLR or TRS) on the Fantom to route the sound from the JP80 into the Fantom?

I’ve never had luck using the Fantom inputs. You have to go into settings and enable them every time you power up. Maybe I’m wrong and someone can enlighten me.
Fantom is long due a firmware update.

I also have both in use, the JP-80 and a Fantom-7. I know that there is a lot of overlapping in sounds, but I could not bring it over my heart, to sell the JP-80, I still like that synth.

Pitty that Roland gave it up so soon.

They gave up on it because all the baby boomers at Gear Space had nothing but negative opinions about it which readers believed and sales weren't going well for the JP80.
