Speakers for Fantom 8

Post by rb293 »

What are people using for speakers/monitors for the fantom.... I am mainly interested in getting the best piano sound. My current setup is Yamaha HS80m which is the first version of the Yamaha hs8 monitors... I also tried them through my Neumann KH120 and JBL 305's... I just can't get excited about the piano sound.. I have a RD2000 and that sounds much better. Maybe it is something I am doing wrong ... Any suggestions thanks

Get the HS8S subwoofer!

I got the older HS10W which was a very nice addition to my HS80m set. Used mainly for mixing, I find it a useful addition to my setup.

Currently using floor standers: Definitive Technology Mythos ST. Very happy indeed. 14 Hz lower range achived at A-1 (A0 minus 12 steps or one octave down) when tuning equal temperament 448 @ A4. Great pipe organs. Funny to see the left hand speaker walking and turning sideways as the lowest chords are going on. Last week I found it turned 180 degrees, actually facing the wall, when I finished playing !!!!

Sadly, the on-board amplifier powering the subwoofer on the right hand channel speaker failed almost a year ago and I am still planning what to do next: enjoying as it is with just one subwoofer, fixing the failed amplifier in a speaker bought in 2008, going Golden Ear Triton R or HEDD via Type 5 or Type 7 or Type 20, all Mk2, and a couple of matching Bass 8 subwoofers.Initially thought on Type 20, but perhaps the smallest Type 5 would get better results due to a better separation on frequency ranges, as stated in next Stereophile article... https://www.stereophile.com/content/gra ... -subwoofer

"I discovered that, in order to achieve a correctly balanced character, a loudspeaker's high frequencies must not be more extended than its low frequencies, and vice versa. Every loudspeaker has what I call a geometric center to its power bandwidth; adding extension to the top or bottom tends to throw that power center off, making reproduction feel unbalanced".

Anyway...Buchardt's A700 are Active Wireless Speakers about to be available next September and they announce an astonishing 17 - 40.000 Hz +/- 1.5dB frequency range !!!! Mmmmmm.....so tempting.
They include LLE, a way to truly enjoy bass at low listening volumes !!!! Mmmmmm......my Fantom 8 transmitting audio wirelessly to far field speakers !!!!

Most probably I will keep my money (no, no, go Buchardt; no, no, keep your hard earned money; no, no, go Buchardt....) while using the system (no, no, go Buchardt; no, no, keep your hard earned money; no, no, go Buchardt....) I am enjoying so much, until something else happens to fail (no, no, go Buchardt; no, no, keep your hard earned money; no, no, go Buchardt....order now, come on.)
By then, who knows, HEDD might just be releasing Mk XIX...!!!! (Mmmmm, upgrading my old 2021 Buchardt's then?)

But what do you mean by "... can't get excited about the piano sound..." ? This machine can output any imaginable sound, and it is easily done considering none of us will hear anything out of 10-20000 Hz. You can make your own piano. I have a scene with 16 zones with 64 stereo partials to make just a piano. Pitch ranges, octave shift, velocities, decays, releases, resonance, chorus....gains... So outstanding.
A passerby said: that sounds terrific. I thought it was
one of those huge concert Steinways.
It was great to hear and made me very happy, since I don't like the metallic sound from Yamaha's and very much prefer the woody sound from Steinways (be them from Germany or USA, we leave that for a later talk) and I was truly aiming at that Steinway beautiful piano character when building the scene. The trick: larger attack, achived dialing a number on Fantom and by a lower string tension on the real thing.
Also, a softer hammer felt contributes to the whole trick.
In the end, a lovely woody sound with far much better dynamic range.

I am not sure how to build your own samples... I always start with a preset and tweak it from there... I will try to dig deeper and find how I do that... thx for the info.. thx

That is exactly the path I follow...
Making a sound from the void is far from my abilities.
I might be able to achieve it as time passes by, but so far I am building houses with the bricks already made available in stores, so to speak.
Building a scene I need some kind of sound to fit my idea.
Then the search starts...
I most of the time avoid those Super Natural sounds due to their lack of settings.
When I hear a ZenCore that approaches my wishes I see what waves are in its partials.
Then I see how they sound one by one.
At times, a partial has a velocity or keyrange that makes no sound if I am not on the appropriate key and within the velocity envelope.
If any of the right hand channels are seen not used I might go and fit another wave there.
Then comes the adjusting of everything needed until it is finally achived.
Not long ago I discovered that each partial can be set to DRY or MFX. It was great: I can get four voices, three making a phrase and the last one concluding with its own effect. No more blurring !!!!
Still lots of great things to be discovered, and I suppose a new update should be no more than a month away....
The funny thing is that any new thing available arises so many possibilities that I get stuck in the progress. As if reading a book gave you wonders along the first ten pages and you pause enjoying them a lot while knowing the book ends hundreds of pages later. And that around every half a year an appendix is added...

I use four Yamaha HS-8s on stands and the matching subwoofer. That sub really sings out on the low keys. It's also the sound for my PC, using a Babyface Pro instead of Windows' sound. And of course it's great for Cubase 10.5 sound.

Using the TotalMix FX mixer, both the PC and Roland are plugged in to the Babyface. Then I just use the mixer to choose one or the other, or both at the same time.

A pair of Adam A77X for me! I do like very much also the Sony noise-cancelling headphones for serious practice. The piano (V-Piano types my fave) sounds really very good through them. Also I do not get distracted by "key-clicks" form the keyboard mechanisms.

Each one has their own preferences, but the above is definitely mine!!

PreSonas Eris E5 XT
Just the right size, with excellent 3 way low cutoff switch that actually helps tame existing room.
Added bonus - they were a close sonic and monetary match for existing Sennheiser HD 280 phones

Yeah, I'm still going through all the piano sounds and settings and well, I'm still looking. I originally had a Nord Stage 3 (on backorder) but I got interested in the Fantom and the vast selection of Cloud sounds, so I had them change my order to the Fantom. Now I'm wondering if I should have held out for the Nord. Most of the piano sounds have too much midrange. The EQ definitely helps here, and if you've seen my 'reverb' post, that helps too.

Go to "Effects" section (next to the 16 pads), turn the "Type" knob and a menu will appear. Select "Equalizer" then push the "Param" button. Your EQ will appear on the main screen. Start turning down the midrange knobs and it sounds so much better. I also have the highs and lows at max.

You also have all the filtering envelope controls to play with, including Resonance. But taking out the midrange freqs made the biggest/best difference to me.
