Fantom ... next OS

Post by HappyK »

Hi,
Glad to see the comments on this forum.
I own Fantom 8 since one year and its sequencer still really needs improvements.

Fantom was sold with a sequencer, we should understand a complete sequencer which can
- register tempo
- have more than a 3/4 or 4/4 time signature
- copy complete or part of a pattern/track
- insert 2/4 in a 4/4 song
- have more than a 32 measures in a pattern
- register and show CC changes
- start a pattern/song exactly at the measure we want
- load a complete midi file (in one shot)
- etc

It's clear that I don't work with a DAW, it's my choice and I think I should be able to do everything (or a lot more) with the sequencer.

I hope next OS will come soon and will have many changes concerning the sequencer.

Thanks !

HappyK, I think that in relationship to "...copy complete or part of a pattern/track" can be done via Pattern utility, where a copy& paste is available.

For "...register and show CC changes", you could have a look into the new microscope, I remember seeing that...
Options for the parameters to be shown and arranged are selected by means of the VIEW SELECT, and can be any among Note, Control change, Pitch bend, Poly aftertouch and Channel aftertouch.

And as for "...start a pattern/song exactly at the measure we want", have a look into the LOOP in the patterns...there you can select the start point, the number of measures and a loop.

And while we wait for more measures, your "- have more than a 32 measures in a pattern" desire could be circumnavigated via this....viewtopic.php?f=66&t=58139

Hope it helps you...

Yes I too was disappointed by the Fantom 8 sequencer....

Roland, please enable the following changes:

1) allow tempo point &/or gradient tempo changes - anywhere in a song.
2) ditto for time signatures - both simple and compound.
3) allow elastic audio which adjusts to 1) & 2) above - MIDI syncs with audio
4) allow tempo changes using a foot pedal....live scenario.
5) add accessory for wireless audio and MIDI together.
6) allow import and export of up to 999 measure as a SMF for 16 tracks.
7) allow different arpeggio patterns on different tracks. Not 100% certain if this is possible?
8) allow connection of SSD/flash ROM to increase storage of samples.
9) create Mac OS X editor for Roland Fantom 8 to create sounds and songs/sequencer programming.

Any more guys and gals? ......

I would like to see a small but very convenient update to the interface:

Have every option list scrollable by a function knob (the 'E'-knobs under the display) in addition to the jog wheel. It's very inconsistent now, at some screens you can use one to scroll through list options (system menu, FX), on others not. I find the jog wheel lacks precision (its clicks are softer) and is in the wrong spot for several purposes. My left hand would cover the display, while playing with the right.

If not, then at least for the tone screens. It would serve tone auditioning especially:
E1 to scroll through the pages of a tone category (as presently)
E2 to scroll through the individual tones in that category (my request)

In addition: when scrolling with E1 you reach the end of a tone category or sub category (tab), you should automatically enter the next (sub) category. Maybe as an option.

With this you can access all the tones with your left hand, while playing notes with your right. I think a device with thousands of tones needs a convenient way like this to scroll through all of them. Touching them individually on the display or reaching to the jog (left hand covers the display) is not.

(right now, E2 is the search button when scrolling tone category pages, but that search icon can move to a top corner in the display. It's to a waste to use that rotating knob just for a push)

Indeed, importing a midi file should be minimal functionality. If only to recover all the hours of work I've been spending to create them on my old Fantom G. Can't wait for an OS update that supports this basic need.

I was recording this morning and assigned TFX to S3.
After measure 4, S3 was used requesting TFX to come in, and it did, but when playing the recording it was still ON.
So the recording does not record those effects changes.

Another thing to be improved....

Hello,
New memeber just today.

I too own a Fantom 8 and am dissapointed with the sequencer. I was hoping that something better would be available in v2.0

Does Roland consider what users say in this forum ?
My feature request (in addition to what others have said, such as simple importing) would be the inclusion of a linear sequencer like that in the FA workstations. This along with the ability to select the sequencer mode for each Scene (Pattern or linear) would be great to see.

Thanks for any insights which can be provided.

Hi, aemmett...

You are asking if Roland does consider what users say in this forum, and I think it did and it will...
We have so many wishes/requests now and then !!!!

Hi FGM,
Thanks for the reply, that is good to know.
Only had my Fantom since September so have not read much in the furum yet to know what that may have taken on board and include in the v2.0 update.

I agree with the above suggestions for a new OS update, particularly the following:
[*]EXTEND 32 BAR LIMIT
[*]SUPPORT FOR OTHER TIME SIGNATURES
[*]TEMPO CONTROL

I would also like to add the following suggestions.

[*]The ability to have assignable MFX effect parameters to be controlled through the 8 knobs. Right now it is limited to CC's and basic effect parameters.

[*]This is a big one: The ability to SAVE input effect settings so they can be recalled later like on the MPC Force. For instance, one setting for microphones, another for sampling keyboards, etc. This way I could switch between sampling different instruments with ease. Thanks!

I just resolved one of my issues with assignable MFX parameters. You can do this through the patch edit settings. I just found the video below (see around 12:40).
