Flash dimension for EXZ expansions

Post by Benis67 »

We know that it is possible to load up to 16 different EXZexpansions: what is not known is the overall capacity of the flash available for expansions. Unlike the ESX expansions (dimension 32 MB), the size of the EXZ expansions is variable (EXZ005 EXZ Studio Sounds = 99 MByte, EXZ006 EXZ World Instruments = 83 MB, EXZ001 EXZ Stage Piano 1= 82 MByte... ..EXZ004 EXZ Power Drums = 65 MByte). Considering the max 16 expansions, I would say that at least 1-1,5 GB will be available. (16 * 65 MByte = 1040 MB = 1GByte;16 * 82 MByte = 1312 MB = 1,3 GByte ).
To get an answer you would need a service manual to check the size of the flash, or a statement by Roland :-) Unfortunately, after loading the expansions I don't think it is possible to see the percentage of free flash. I don't have a Fantom, (at least for now !!) can anyone check?

When you load the EXZ expansions into memory, it just shows how many slots each uses (these first six all use one 'slot'). The fact that it identifies how many 'slots' each one uses leads me to believe there may be EXZ sets in the future that are big enough to take up two slots (or more). There is no actual memory size listed for the EXZ sets or for how much space is available.

There *is* however a button to 'optimize' the expansion space. The manual says that if you add and delete a lot of EXZs that the space can become fragmented and this is a way to defragment it (for lack of a better term). I thought we stopped having to defrag in 2004......
