New Member :-) and a request for direction

Post by mmathew »

Dear Clan -

New member here. I have the RD and the FP-90 which I and my daughter use to learn and teach each other. A photo of the piano corner in our house:

:-)
I am not an advanced player. I am a self-taught adult beginner. I arrived at RD-2000 after cycling through a series of trials and error. Few thousand dollars later, and tired from all that searching, I arrived at these models from Roland. Ironically, these were the models I originally shortlisted :-| AFter being led astray by samples, VSTs, samples again, more VSTs, monitor setups, monitor + sub setup, home theater hookup, etc. etc....

I arrived back to Roland. I have to say the wealth (though the bank is considerably shorter) of information led me to believe in Roland's instruments and philosophy to do digital better than anyone else. Love my Rollies.

I noticed there is an update for the RD. I tried doing it with a couple of different thumb drives. Both of these two different drives didn't work. I kept getting the "no update file" message on screen.

- I also tried an offbrand drive.
- I tried formatting both onboard the RD and on Windows 10 - separate attempts, of course
- I tried placing just the .BIN file under the root directly
- I tried placing the .BIN file under the root, as well as the directory it was in (after extract) under the root

Any other pointers? At this point, I'm inclined to ask - from those of you kind folks who have updated the firmware successfully - can you point me to the exact drive you used - I'll willingly buy it.

Thanks again dear folks!

hm, of course you could buy one of the original usb sticks from Roland, if you want - you get the info when downloading the FW.
I do backups and FW upgrades with normal USB sticks lying around; been a while so I don't remember the exact procedure, but some suggestions:
- not sure if your stick may be to large, RD-2000 hw could be outdated here, try one with 1 or 2 GByte.
- I think I had problem when they weren't formatted on the RD.
So look for a smaller stick, format it on the RD, and then - as a test - try to save a backup from RD on that one (somewhere in the system menu). If that works, you can be somewhat sure that the stick should work for the FW upgrade as well.
You get detailed instructions when downloading the file, it's on the webpage and I think there's a readme as well in the download package.
The bin file has to be in the root dir, and you have to hold the write button when powering on - that should do it.

Thank you SteelyDan and apologies for the late response. It was a 'Duh' moment for me - I was using the "USB for Update" slot instead of "USB Memory"

:-|

In my defense - that slot did say "update".

Once I inserted the USB into the "USB Memory" slot - it was happy days! Absolutely no problems with the upgrade. I also used the same slot subsequently to load expansion packs.
