Just Bought a RD-2000 and Questions

Post by RolandUzer »

Hello. I just bought a RD2000 last week. I traded in my Roland RD700NX to purchase the RD2000 - so I have some experience with Roland digital pianos.

Maybe some can answer my questions:
1) Is there some way to turn off the reverb effect? So far, I have only found the reverb volume control, no on/off control. When auditioning or editing a piano sound, I often like to compare with and without reverb.

2) Is there a way to save a Tone itself, or do I have to save a Tone as part of a Program?

3) Sort of a subjective sound "quality" question: sometimes it seems (to me) that the modeled V-Pianos Tones have a sort of soft distortion - as if being played thru a fuzz device on low settings. (I monitor the RD2000 thru a Mackie mixer into a pair of Alesis powered speakers with careful attention to gain-staging - I am very sure I am not overloading the mixer and/or speakers) My other impression is that the attack of the modeled V-Pianos is "soft" - by which I mean the attack is not as quick and aggressive as I hear on acoustic pianos. Right now, I am appreciating those modeled piano tones as useful keyboard instruments, but I am not sure they are good representations of acoustic pianos. Is this just my ears getting used to a new sound? Does anyone else share my misgivings about the modeled piano Tones?

Thanks for reading. I appreciate any feedback.

Re: #1

Well, the RD-2000 does take some learning curve even if you have owned an earlier model. Can you try this quick method (out of a few different ways this can be done):

Press SHIFT + REVERB

it takes you to the Reverb screen where you should be able to turn of/off and change some parameters.

Another way is to follow the instructions on page 16 of the OM.

Re: #2

There are tons of videos talking about operating the RD-2000. The one that I found most helpful to me personally, is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbVTi9Nom8c

In short, yes, you have to save it as a Program.

To your 3rd question: I can understand you very well. I felt exactly the same in the beginning. And I am still not 100% satisfied with the piano sound, but I have discovered a setting option that has greatly improved the sound.

Press the Key Touch button and change the first two values (I don't have the piano in front of me and don't know the exact name of the setting by memory).

Good luck and have fun with it!

Press SHIFT + REVERB
I'm confused. :-)

My RD-2000 doesn't have a REVERB key to allow me to do this...

Can you explain what you mean by pressing SHIFT + REVERB

the effect section buttons & controls change their meaning depending on the select switch.
I'm quite sure you can also manipulate the reverb via the program edit menu

Yes of course, after 3 years of use, I know those options.

But I still don't see where you press SHIFT + REVERB to disable/enable reberb quickly.

Maybe mmathew could explain how you do this ?

Oh dear. That was a typo. I meant to summarize the below from the user manual:

If you hold down the [SHIFT] button and turn the REVERB
[LEVEL]–[PRE DELAY] knobs, the Reverb screen appears. In the
Reverb screen, you can edit the reverb type and other reverb related parameters.

I messed up; apologies. Hopefully you don't need this response, by now and have figured it out yourself :-)

Aha! Excellent news. So I'm not going mad... yet. :-)

Thanks for the clarification.

Just to complete the picture, this only works if you have pressed the SELECT button to put the 8 rotary encoders into REVERB/DELAY mode, otherwise the Reverb screen does not appear, but rather you just get a value popup window with the current value as you turn the knob.

Bothe useful depending on what you are trying to do.
