Recording synth through RD2000

Post by Woolly66 »

Hello, I have a new set up but can’t get the different parts to communicate to each other. I have a Waldorf Iridium synthesizer, connected with MIDI in and out (and left and right Audio cables) to my RD 2000. And I connect the RD 2000 to my PC with USB.
When I listen through headphones (from the RD headphones port) I can hear the internal RD sounds and I can her the Iridium perfectly, however I can only record the Internal RD sounds into my DAW on the PC, I cannot record the Iridium sounds even though I can hear them.
I got a response from Roland support. They said the external input will not send audio through USB (unlike the internal RD 2000 sound engine) so they say I need an external audio interface.
I am very confused and I feel there should be a simple solution to this.

1) why would I need to buy another piece of kit (audio interface) when the RD 2000 already has an internal audio interface.
2) I understand an audio interface is mostly an ADC with a preamp but surely all the information being passed around the the synth, the RD 2000 and the PC is all
Digital until it’s converted into analogue after the PC before the headphones - so why does it even need an ADC?
3) How is it that the RD 2000 cannot seem to do this simple job when basic
MIDI keyboards could control external synths decades ago.

I appreciate the answer to this may be very simple but being new to this technology I may have missed it. I would really appreciate any suggestions!

The RD is many things, but is not a mixer.

Roland chose not to send the aux in through to output. It is not even shown on the manual p17 functional flow diagram.

If you can separately send the Waldorf to your DAW, why not use the DAW as your mixer?

Otherwise, there are many inexpensive quality mixers avail. I use the iConnectivity Audio 4+. but looks like it is no longer avail.

Mixing apples and oranges. RD 2000 is an excellent midi controller. And it does exactly what you say - controls external synths. Again, it is not a mixer.
