Jimmy Pond posted his Jupe X patch for Van Halen Love Walks In, which I immediately had to try on my Xm. Well, I wanted an even thicker sound, so was augmenting from the RD. By the time I finished, don’t think the RD does too bad on its own.
I started with D50 PCM Piano for the piano, but was too subtle for the wall of brass. Went to SN piano vs V (007 NX Concert Grand) so I can add compression for even more punch.
Z2 and 3 both get synth brass, doubled up and panned out wide. Never too much synth brass.
- Z2 is the D50 Rich Brass from EXP-6 (115) - on EXT pedal so it can be backed down during the verse
- Z3 is Wide SynBrass (883)
Z4 has MG Bass 3, 0542, F3 and below, for more bass punch
FC2 is master expression, but for Van Halen, just leave pushed all the way to 11.
Got a simple rock beat on the rhythm, if you are so inclined, Assign 9 has start / stop
Little bit of delay and reverb. Cannot add too much to all the synth brass or you get a big muddle.
There is lots of good vintage stuff in EXP-6, same patches the Jupe folks have to pay $20 to load. And may even have a richer sound on the RD.
Need a sysex librarian to load. I have successfully used iPadOS SysexBase and Mac Sysex Librarian.

Re: Program for Van Halen Love Walks In
Nice work!
Looking at the sysex did you send the settings for zone 1 to 4 with F0 to F7 for each setting such as effects?
Have you found a way to dump a complete program from the RD to a computer?
Korg synths Such as the Kronos send this as a single sysex string for a program or combi but im not sure the RD can be handled this way. Also theres no checksum in their spec.
Cheers

Re: Program for Van Halen Love Walks In
The dump uses 36 individual requests for all eight internal (two each) & external, four Mfx, four Trem, delay, reverb, rhythm, & program common blocks. Essentially the block labeled Program on page 9 of the midi implementation guide.
Also, the Roland boards I have used to date do not accept a request longer than 02 00 (midi) in length. So it would take four to completely capture program internal. But, I am skipping the piano individual voicing section of Program Internal, as there was some anomaly in restoring - need to get back to this. This means I can get by with two messages for each internal Program zone.
So I am dumping an essentially complete program, but in 36 pieces.
Roland does have a checksum spec, but it seems to ignore and accept the message as long as any value is present.
