I think I must be missing something? I can't set the midi device ID to anything lower than 17 on my system-8 - is there a way?

Device ID is generally for SysEx, and is not the same as a MIDI channel. At the moment it doesn't really serve a purpose. Eventually, if we get SysEx doc, it might be used for situations in which you have more than one System-8 in your MIDI chain, and need to send separate SysEx messages to each of them. In short, you don't need it to go below 17.
