Juno-DS Sound Tweakability

Post by modalmojo »

Hi Juno-DS enthusiasts,

New to this forum, I think Juno-DS is a fantastic deal for offering such a wide palette of quality sounds at this price point, but I would like to ask for your advice before pulling the trigger for DS-88 (like Ivory Feel-G with escapement).

I understand there are 4 knobs and 4 sliders for some tweaking, but Is it possible to edit all parameters of the synth engine from these physical controls? Or is it only possible to use Tone Manager for accessing and editing all parameters? Can I assign CC controls on the parameters for external midi control?

Thanks.

Yes you sure can! Get at everything, inside the box, unlike the older Juno Di where you had to use a computer to do 'deeper' editing. Just press SAMPLE EDIT and DAW MODE buttons simultaneously, and you're in Edit Mode.
Now, either go for it, or read the manual.

Thanks Tommy, that's good to know!

It's going to be some menu diving...lol, I just downloaded the owner's manual, looks like I can only use the value dial to edit the parameters? The knobs and silders have no effect on editing, right?

You'll find you do a lot of arrowing left and right. Here are some tricks:
Hold shift before and while you're turning the big data knob, and the numbers will move much quicker.

Same goes for arrowing. If you're at the top line of the display in an edit screen, the right arrow will move to the next Tab (meaning the next whole page, like from TVF Env to TVA, for example.) But if you've dove down into the numbers on the lines below the top (TAB) line on the screen, you can press shift and an arrow, and you will go to the next page (like from the TVF Env settings to the TVA settings.)

Last tip: press both the left-most buttons (below MODE) and you will instantly be transported into EDIT mode. You still have a choice between whether to edit effects, or patch, or performance or part (depending on what mode you're in, Patch or Performance.)

But you're right. To the best of my knowledge, the 4 knobs and 4 sliders are not editing tools. The editing is done more to the right of the display. These LH tools are for live tweaking, and are well designed and assigned, IMO. You can do a bit of reassigning, btw: the bottom row of the knobs are global, not set or saved per patch.
