hey there!
i consider getting the juno-ds61. a couple of questions for owners:
1) can i switch between patterns on the fly?
2) if that is the case, is there a noticeable lag when switching between patterns? (the current electribe models have that problem.)
3) if i'm playing a pattern and switch to another pattern (assuming it's possible), does it complete the first pattern to the end of the sequence, or is it immediate?
4) does the new pattern play seamlessly or do i have to manually start it? (ideally, the first pattern will finish it's current sequence before starting the new pattern, and it will play automatically.)
5) has anyone organized patterns into songs? for example, 1 pattern per song part: intro, verse, bridge, chorus which would be 4 total patterns (with up to 8 tracks per pattern).
many thanks! keep up the good work, roland clan.
switching between patterns on the fly: possible or not?
Re: switching between patterns on the fly: possible or not?
When you switch to another pattern(you can save different patterns as several performances), new pattern starts from the end of previous pattern seamlessly, automatically and immediatelyrob_76 wrote:hey there!

Re: switching between patterns on the fly: possible or not?
1. Yes. It's not the most user-friendly way but it's possible. You select patterns by turning the jog wheel (or maybe inc/dec buttons, not sure about that) so make sure you record the wanted patterns next to each other.
2. Not that I noticed.
3. It completes the running pattern and then switches to the next one automatically.
4. As long as you selected Loop "on" everything keeps running.
5. Not as such, but it is possible for sure. Keep in mind that every time you create a new pattern you have to select the right patch to every track again. This can be time consuming so it's better to copy the first pattern to a new one, erase the recordings and record your new pattern. Or you can start with an empty pattern where you assign the wanted instruments and then save that as a template for every new pattern of your "song".

Re: switching between patterns on the fly: possible or not?
wow. thanks for your insight, hermax and yannleo. very much appreciated. a follow-up question, if i may.
unfortunately the sequencer still lacks swing/shuffle. i thought about the following workaround: the mx-1 generates swing. the juno is compatible with the aira link ports of the mx-1. at juno's 'system settings' i'd choose 'slave' instead of 'master' as 'sync mode'. its 'clock source' would be 'usb'. so far, so good.
here's the question: can i change juno patterns/performances on the device (by using the jog wheel) WHILE the juno is synchronized to the incoming clock signal from the mx-1?

Re: switching between patterns on the fly: possible or not?
Can I kindly hijack your thread? I'm in the same situation as you, I was about to place an order for the ds.
Regarding point 5, I'm not sure I understand fully, is it actually possible to record songs then?
I'd very much like to create a composition out of turning pads patterns on and off.
could I store this somewhere and play it back in the future?
can I also save this as .wav file, on the usbstick, for later sample playback?
thx
Luca

Re: switching between patterns on the fly: possible or not?
You can't record a chain of pattern sequences. You record them separately and play them back separately. You can only chain them on the fly, one after another.
You can't record the "turn on and off" of parts: a pattern sequence is recorded with each part either turned on or off. You can only turn parts on and off manually while the pattern is playing. If you're using many patterns, you can have that part turned off or removed completely in certain pattern sequences of your song. In that sense yes, you can record the "turn on and off" of parts.
There's also a non-standard way to make a whole song in one single pattern sequence. You lower the tempo to the minimum, set the number of measures to 8 (which is the maximum), the beat to 32/2 and turn off quantize. That way you have over 25 minutes to record in 1 pattern sequence, but you're locked to 8 parts ("patches") for the whole song (because a pattern sequence has 8 parts, and you're using only 1 pattern sequence) and you also lose quantize.
I don't think you can export directly to WAV (only to MIDI), but since the keyboard has an audio interface, you can connect it to your computer via USB and then record it in your computer using Audacity or any audio recording software or DAW.
I'm not sure if I answered your question.

Re: switching between patterns on the fly: possible or not?
thx for getting back to me.
To expand on this topic, how capable is the juno ds, when used as audio interface with a pc via usb, in conjunction with a daw software:
could it be used to record a midi performance made out of me turning pads on and off?
can I then play such performance back whilst recording another midi track and sound of me composing on top, using the juno ds?
finally, can i use it to record a midi track of a second keyboard ( midi out to juno midi in ) and its sound ( via juno input ext )?
in other words how well does it perform as audio interface? or should have I gotten a fa08 instead? :)

You can use the jog wheel, [+] [-] buttons and you can use the control pedal too. If you use the pedal, you configure whether it goes up or down.Hermax wrote:1. Yes.
