I had a korg M50, it was a mess, a lot of noise, too high volume.
Now I put a Casio PX5s, it's wonderful, no problem.
So, definitely, it all matters on impedance.
Thanks, I guess there is no way to change the the input volume under system settings. I read there is such an option on the roland FA.

I managed to do a quick test and plugged the nord lead a1's input. It comes in a bit too loud but it doesn't distord. I need to keep have the nord lead a1's volume knob at 9 o'clock in order for the volume to be pleasant, not too high nor too low.

Agreed. The fact that it's a 3.5mm connector says a lot. It's intended for "domestic" use. For playing live, a 3.5mm connector is not reliable enough: the plug may be pulled accidentally and there can be noise if the cable is disturbed.

Also, on the back of the keyboard, right above the connector, it says "THRU", with an arrow from the input straight to the output. That helps to explain why you can't change the volume.
