Tone Manager issue

Post by eloc »

For the love of all things holy... how in the world do I add a new set of samples to my keyboard? I have a ds-61, loaded up nice, using tone manager, but I cannot for the LIFE of me find out how to do this. There isn't ANY info in the manual, the website, YouTube, the forums, anything that I can find, as how to how setup for a multisample. It seems really straightforward to setup the key regions, but there's nothing in my sample list. I don't see any options for adding to that list, or pointing to a folder, or dragging a file in, nothing. All my sample lists are blank with no obvious way to populate them.

I can EDIT a sample in Tone Manager fine, because that allows me to point to a folder and load a file. But then it just save the file as a new WAV and I still have nothing listed for multisampling at all. All I want to do, is take some WAV files that I use in another sampler, assign their root keys/regions, and save that so I can access it on my DS. But I can't even get started into that process until I can add samples into the Manager.

What super basic step am I missing here?

You can only load samples with an usb stick. Not with usb cable and tone manager.

So, I'm still not sure what you mean by that. If I open Tone Manager with just my USB expansion drive plugged in, it tells me I need to connect the DS to load a sample list. I can export edited samples to the USB using TM completely fine, but that doesn't help me. My question wasn't how to get samples onto a DS, I was asking how to get the TM's sample list functioning so that I can map a new multisample patch. I know how to map mutisamples, and exporting to the DS seems straightforward enough, but I can't get them into TM to do that to begin with. TM just shows my sample list as always empty, and I don't know why.

Well, this has been a HORRIBLY disappointing experience. I came trying to ask a question about a basic function on my Juno, trying to get some help. After a week, I've had one reply that didn't address what I had asked about, and nothing else. And this is on the official forums for Roland... If I can't get help on how to use my Juno here, what does THAT say?

In the meantime, I figured out my issue. It was stupid and convoluted, but I figured it out.

If I want to add a new multisample, I have to save each sample using TM to a USB drive. Then I use the drive to 1 by 1, add each sample to my Juno after making sure that it is disconnected from the TM. THEN, I have to plug the Juno BACK into the TM software, and reload the TM program. Then, and only then, can I start to populate my sample manager and make a new mulitsample with the parameters I want.

I'm glad I figured it out, but honestly... this whole experience has really soured me on owning a Roland keyboard. I tried for days and days to get the support that I needed, but couldn't. This cost me the ability to properly use my keyboard for a gig I had bought it for. I tried to make use of a heavily advertised feature, but couldn't until over a week of trying every combo I could think of without any help. Sure, I figured it out this time, but only AFTER it was too late for me. And why would I believe this will be the last time I have an issue like this?

I got this keyboard, so happy to add it into my rig after hearing YEARS of positive talk about the Juno series. Now?... I think I'm just returning it and buying a Nord. At least they actually reply when you need help.

I get your frustration but there is something else you missed. This is NOT the official Roland forum. This is a forum of individuals sharing the possession of some Roland equipment. Not everyone of these people own a DS. And not every owner of a DS is trying to do what you want. Bad luck that you are the first one with this kind of problem but that's exactly why this forum exists. To share insights with others. Personally, I would be happy to have found the solution myself and be able to help any member with the same problem in the future. And I certainly wouldn't dispose my DS only because nobody else had a solution.

My issue isn't that nobody else had a solution. My worry, is that I'm going to run into this problem again down the road. A lack of information already cost me 1 gig, I cannot afford for it to cost me another. I cant rely right now on my DS if I dont know how to use it. I'd love to spend the time and really sink my teeth into this guy, but as it currently stands the only way that seems possible is to figure all the features out by basically trial and error. In used to synths having a steep learning curve, but they also normally have manuals to cover all the functions. Or at least another way to find that info that I'd need. One of the core reasons I bought my DS, was because it seemed like a good gigging sampler. I was clearly incorrect, and I'd be better off just using a DAW-based sampler to get my work done. I like this keyboard, but between a lack of information and an awkward workflow, I think of be better off just getting something else.
