Desk Percussion Samples

Post by nsheldon »

Hello all.

When you're sitting at your desk waiting for something or rather bored, do you tap on your desk like I do? I've found that my desk actually makes a decent percussion instrument. So, I decided to sample it. :-)

I created 10 samples of me tapping my desk in different places with my hands (using the Fantom to sample it of course). You can listen to a demo of me playing with the resulting samples on the Fantom with this MP3

http://www.nathansheldon.com/fantom-x8/ ... ussion.mp3 (670 kB).

And you can download the zip file containing the AIFF samples themselves for your own use at

http://www.nathansheldon.com/fantom-x8/ ... ussion.zip (337 kB).

Comments are welcome. I'd be interested to hear anything you may compose using the samples.

Regards,

Nathan Sheldon

Hey Nathan,

You aren't the only one by far!

I've always thought that this was normal and acepted behavior. I've actually got an ironing board that sounds a lot like a snare drum and my upper chest serves as a great bass drum. The fingers can do flams, paradiddles, and the like.

If I wasn't on a musician's forum, I would never admit to any of this. But you guys understand, don't you. . ? .

Maybe I sould sample myself claping, hiting my belly, drumming on my thigh and knocking my head ... all the other "body-sounds" are adults-only :-)

groove on!

Some of my most prideful pieceshas been done with plastic bowels, wooden spoons, and of course pots & pans!

One of my favorite tricks is taking a wine glass... drinking it down to any solid note & then sampling the ping I get when I flick the corner.

Indeed. I think many times we as both listeners and composers become a bit too reliant on traditional percussion sounds. It seems more creative to branch out and explore new sounds for percussive rhythms.
