VST - A Joy or a disapointment?

Post by E.Camargo »

Hello guys, here I am, as always, suddenly, with some question.
One day, a man here in Brazil, Stylus's owner, said me something that took me to a state of doubt. As I said before (I guess), I like to build my sample maps, so load in .WAV or .AIF, is not a bad deal 4 me. So I've heard someone here to say, that I am not able to see the audio files of a VST library. Is this right or what?
The reason for this question is that one of my dreams today is the DFH superior, wich is VST.
Could you guys get it clear? Any tip will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Peace - Edu Camargo.

I'm just beginning to try to understand VST myself. Why don't you download a few free vst instruments, as well as a program called Chainer. Chainer can be found at
www.xlutop.com

I use chainer to convert vst into soundfont and do all my editing in soundfont format. From what I understand, you cannot edit a vst instrument, but I may be wrong. The chainer program should help you figure out what is possible.

Edu, your friend is quite correct. Many of the new VSTi's that come bundled with samples do not allow you to use those samples with anything but the VSTi they came with. This is a way for them to protect the content that is quite often bundled with a VST instrument at a much lower price than buying the samples as a stand-alone collection.

Rordog,

Thanks for the info about Chainer, it's exactly what I need! I was looking for an easy way to create multisamples from VST instruments...especially with the new E-Mu Xboard I just bought, which contains the Proteus X LE sound set (also purchased the Planet Earth sounds to go with it). The Proteus X LE version functions as a VST instrument and not as a standalone application. This replaces some of the E-Mu stuff I sold several months ago and I will now be able to import E-Mu samples into the Fantom X! I will also be using a program called SampleRobot to create multisamples from my E-Mu UltraProteus (also have the Real World ROM card, as well as other compatible soundsets). It looks to be a fairly straightforward process but the English manual is just a rough-draft (translated from German), so it can be a bit difficult to follow!

Well, at least, we are still independent. Imagining that many libraries sold today are in VST format, I thought that Me, hardware synth user, will no longer be able to use new qualifyed sounds in my projects. (Unless I try Giga Studio so I can synchronize my brain with today's sampling standards.)
Although I know that these tools are less expensive than hardware synths here, I don't use virtual workstations due to accessibility problems. (For those who are reading this and don't know, I'm visual disabled and I use screen reader software to opperate the computer.)
I'll try the program you've mentioned, RD. Thanks.
By the way, where I can get free VST instruments to start with?

Again, thanks guys.

Peace - Edu Camargo.

Best place to find a good overview of free or cheap or full priced commercial VST instruments is http://www.kvr-vst.com

Camargo, just for curiosity sake, do you use JFW or Window eyes, or maybe another I don't know about? I'm a JFW user myself.

JFW. Version 5.00.621.
At least, with this program, 95% of the world is at the palm of my hand. I love this.
Also from the same company, "Freedom Scientific", I use "OpenBook" for scanning text. Unfortunately they are given away.

Also, I have a software designed by Brazil's Micro Power Software, called "Virtual Vision". I just don't use it because VV and JAWS conflict video interception drives. In some cases I prefer the Windows Narrator; but in a minor proportion.
