Tips for slightly detuned piano

Post by mo2cv »

Hi all,

My band is playing some blues/country covers where I feel I need some "imperfect" piano sounds, which I have not been able to find so far on my FA08. Does anybody have a hint on how I can create a sound like the one on this song, or maybe it's already there, I just haven't found it?

As you can hear, it's all about that slightly detuned sound, not full blown worn-out honky tonk :)

Thanks!

Install EXP-09 Complete Piano expansion, there is a tone in there called "Antique Upright", not as out of tune as a honky-tonk type piano sound, but not as perfect as it could be. That might be pretty close to what you're looking for.

By using dual or creating a studio set (pressing dual and split simultaneously), you could try layering two pianos (two of the same, ex. Full Grand 1 and Full Grand 1), then by using part view, detune them (one + a few cents, the other - a few cents) to create a little wobble in tone. I do this with the synth engine all the time for big leads and things. Just something to consider. Good luck!

As Lunar, I think it is an upright piano. Also try a bit of chorus.

Something else to try which I think works pretty well:

Press the Menu button, go to Part View, then go over to the Vibrato tab. You can adjust rate, depth, and delay of vibrato. You wouldn't normally think of vibrato as something you'd want on a piano sound, but if you slow the rate down to almost as low as it goes, and set the depth to a fairly low number, you can get a subtle fluctuation in pitch which I think will be pretty close to the kind of sound you want.

I think these vibrato settings sound pretty good for a piano sound:

rate: -61
depth: +5
delay: -55

Also, under the Output/EFX tab I have the chorus at 32 and a decent amount of reverb. Of course you'll probably want to try tweaking these settings a bit to find what you think sounds best for what you're playing.
