any G users that switched to the FA?

Post by booyakasha12 »

I for one love the phrase sequencing, and sampler on the G.
Any G users switch to the FA and think it's better or superior in terms of sequencing or sampling?
Any shortcomings compared to the G?

Personally I dont find the FA to be a replacement for the G.
If you have a G I would be looking at the FA as an addon because of its price point.

Im considering getting an FA but im not trading out my G to get one.

Hello Quinnx,

If you have a minute, would you mind outlining what features of the G make you say the FA is an add on for you? I'm just curious to know what's missing on the FA etc. I had the X8 but not a G and I just got the FA-08. Also, did I lose something by getting rid of the X8? Its sequencer didn't work, so I was happy to find a new home for it.

Thanks!

Very interested in the replies to this as well. Keynes action would be deal breaker for me to upgrade from a fantom g to be fa. Has anyone compared the keybeds yet. My initial thought is that the fa will be closer to the Juno g in built quality. And that leaves more sorta undecided. Need to play one.

And RPS, 8 control sliders/volume faders, 16 external MIDI channels, SPDIF In/Out…

and dont forget sample based synthesis
trigger upto 128 samples instead of only 8
That pretty much covers it ;-)

But thats just me..
if you dont do much synthesis in the way of samples
and never used rps
and dont mind that the FA song save does not store tones/synth studio set edits and you have to always write a new studio set and 16 patches for practically every song save..

go for the FA

Sure, I agree if we are talking about the G, but the X8 mentioned by "The un-Dr" does not have 8 control sliders, but all the rest still applies to the X8 too.

However the FA can control 16 MIDI channels a la Fantom X mode

Actually, to be fair, if I remember correctly the Fantom G didn't really excel at multisampling herself. :)
I guess time heals old wounds... ;)

That is correct on version 1.0, but it was corrected immediately after

Thanks, I didn't know that. I'm happy it was corrected!

Yes multisampling works very well with the G especialy when you want to capitalize on some of those VST instruments or even vsynth sound.
Because the G is a real synth/sample workstation.. the possibilities of sound are endless.
Where as the FA even with its expansions are still limited in what is provided in ROM, at least until someone figures out the virtual expansion format and you can then create your own, but even at that i think someone said they are limited to 32mb where as the FG can load close to 1GB of samples for sound synthesis..

But the FA if you can get it to work right will be a good live performer.

Hi Jason, my FA-06 just arrived today, and having sold my Juno Stage to get this, I can tell you that the key action is not too bad compared to it. Not as good, but not a million miles away. It is generally reckoned that the Stage's keys are better than the Di/G/Gi , but not having played them I cannot give a direct comparison.
I can say I'm pretty happy with it though.

Sounds amazing though, especially the Supernatural tones

Wow, thanks for all the replies and I'm sorry if I inadvertently hijacked the thread!

I'm not going to use the FA for live performance, so I might have made a mistake....BUT, I also have Native Instruments software installed on my Mac, so I probably don't need the depth of sampling and sound synthesis on the G or X, either. I also separate gear for velocity sensitive pads for drums etc. Aftertouch I'll cover with a pedal (EV-5 per PauloF's advice). Agree?

But what about audio tracks? Dang, I thought I could use a mic or guitar etc., but I guess not as many tracks? Will have to look that up.

After 5 days with the FA, I now think he keybed is much nicer than the X, but never played the G. Yup, never used RPS on the X.

But that song save problem is definitely bugging me. In fact, I'm having problems figuring out how to record on this dang thing!

Basically, I'm too stupid to really know what the F(&* I'm doing, but, hey, let's not dwell on the obvious, right?! ;-)
