Is it possible (expression pedal question)

Post by LoboLives »

I was just curious if it would be possible to assign one part of a studio set to an expression or volume pedal while the others are not. Much like how Vangelis has a ton of them at his feet so he can bring in sounds when he needs to is this possible with the F.A. or would this be too complicated?

Hey LoboLives

I'd be very interested in this functionality. My FA-08 is on truck for delivery this morning so I don't have the ability to test anything out yet. I have an RD-700GX and frequently use the 4 sliders to be able to fade in/out sounds during a song with ease... something I wish the FA series had.

I just looked through the manual and on Page 44 there is a quick overview of "Settings for Each Part". Under Part Parameters there is a MIDI Rx Filter that says: "Specify the MIDI messages that are received by each
part."

I wonder if you can go in and filter our expression/volume MIDI messages to certain tones so that using the expression pedal only affects that tones that are listening for those MIDI messages?

If anyone can test/figure this out you'd be my hero as this is the feature that I know I'm going to miss the most when I start using my FA-08 as primary.. having the ability to easily and quickly bring in sounds as needed (aka add a Pad under a Piano, bring is strings under an EP, etc)

You can definitely do this with an expression pedal. I'm not in front of my FA at the moment but I think it goes something like this:

First, create a Studio Set containing the piano on Part 1 and the strings on Part 2, for example.

Second, within that Studio Set, go to Studio Set Common / Pedal (that is, to the "Pedal" tab within the "Studio Set Common" settings) and make sure the Pedal Assign Source is set to Studio.

Third, in the same tab, set Pedal 1 Assign (or whichever pedal is your expression pedal) to control "Expression."

Fourth, go to Studio Set Common / Control Sw and for Part 1, turn the "Pedal1" control to "Off."

That should do it, and you can use this technique to control volume for multiple Parts of your choice simultaneously.
