The guy just drools for a beam controller or a touch screen but "knows" that aftertouch is useless.

Next, he will say that "velocity is overrated":

after all, "he never really saw rick wakeman use it".

What next? A stripped-down Jupiter25 with no black keys? He will probably recommend that as well.

Did you ever REALLY, REALLY SEE Jean Michel Jarre hitting a black key? No. So what?

Oh... fuggeddabbaudit.

AT is not useful. I never use it and have never met a pro who uses it. You can better control a parameter using a pedal if you wish. Steinways, Rhodes and Hammonds don't have AT.

I don't know why people insist on telling other people what they should find useful.

And exactly how many pros have you met and asked about this?

Pedals are okay, but do not feel as expressive, nor do they auto-release the effect when you release the note. Also, many boards only have only one control pedal input, and it is common to want to use that for volume of one or more layers.

Steinways, Rhodes, and Hammonds don't have pitch bend or mod wheels either. (Nor do people try to get them to sound like, for example, violins, guitars, or CS-80s.)

I use aftertouch quite regularly live for things like filter cut off and modulations.

I use it more on my other keyboards as it's it (physically) so poorly implemented on the Fantom X, but for me it would be a deal breaker on a new performance synth. As interested as I am in the '80, this is enough to put me off the '50 straight away.

the price that roland and other manufactures are now asking for their products is what they think they can sell them for. as they wont sell that many as the market for such products has shrunk. material wise the Jupiter 50 costs very little to make, as does the 80. you can buy a touch screen tablet for about £150 with a screen bigger than the jupiter 80, and the screen is about one third of the total retail cost of the tablet. an akai mpk88 has a 88 key weighted hammer action keyboard with after touch, and more hardware, and costs less than a third of the price of a jupiter 50. a midi thru socket would have cost about 20 pence to fit. the chips used in the jupiter's are low end sharc dsps. the kronos brains, and atom cpu and motherboard, would cost less than £100 to buy from a computer store. roland had to take bits off the jupiter 50, not out of cost, but to differentiate it from the 80.
